A 4th gen Camry wagon with a TRD body kit and TRD Alumi-K wheels. Prices don’t seem !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , either (especially for low KM examples). I also wouldn’t mind one without the body kit, and those are even cheaper.

* Yes, I’ve realized for a while now that I’m not exactly “normal”.

Its cause in the 90’s even the Camry was cool. Toyota used to be so much cooler.

I just don’t like the fact that the wagons of that era look like their sedan counterparts with a bubble on the back. Other than that, this car is pure sex.

I’ll be honest. I’ve always kind of liked this gen Camry.

The 4th gen (and 3rd gen) Camry was a cool car for what it was (a standard family car).

Too bad they got dumpy engines.

The back does seem like a bit of an afterthought. It looks pretty good from this angle.

I like how it manages to hit a good medium between over-styled and under-styled. This was also at the time when Toyota had outstanding interiors that held up well.

My parents had a ‘99 for the longest time (sold in 2012), and I had a lot of great memories from growing up with it. It was in pretty good shape by the time we sold it (except for some significant hail damage). Last I heard, it’s still running strong at 175,000 miles.

We had a ‘99 with the 5S-FE for a good while, and the engine wasn’t too bad. It was powerful enough if you stepped on it (although my ‘09 2.5X feels quite quick in comparison), and still got decent fuel economy. You might as well not have tried to accelerate with the air conditioner running, however, it was one of the best air conditioners I’ve experienced in a car.

I remember back in SCC a guy turned his Camry into a touring car except for the car seats in the back.. Now with two kids I support his efforts.

Yeah, I had one with the 3s and one with the 5s, the 3s felt quicker.

Did someone say “pure sex”?

Oh, what happened to you, Toyota.

Was the 3S in a 2nd gen?

I seem to recall the 5S only had a few more horsepower than the 3S, but the 2nd gen weighed ~500lbs less than the 4th gen.

we had a 2nd gen with 3s and 3rd gen with 5s. Obviously there is a wieght difference, but I also had a rav4 with the 3s that was on par for weight and it was a sportscar compared to the 3rd gen with the 5s.

longer stroke so lower redline I assume.plus the added mass of the internals make it slower to respond

yeah, it went from being square to oversquare, which should give it better low end, but it never felt...fun.

I wonder how much of that has to do with gearing? The E250/E250F (F being four-wheel drive) transmission in the RAV4 appears to have moderately lower gearing compared to the A140E in the Camry. Lower gearing would mean faster acceleration, at least to a degree. I could see why the Camry would be geared higher for better cruising rather than acceleration.

That wouldn’t quite explain the 2nd gen Camry, however, since the Camry used the A140E transmission from 1983 to 2001 (although this one could be more down to weight).

probably a combo of many things. my rav4 was a manual and the camrys were an auto.

Probably. The difference between auto and manaul is fairly significant, too.
