While on my trip to Nashville, my Buell Blast’s muffler experienced some active iron-oxide based weight reduction in the form of a quite large hole in the muffler. This made it sound meaner, but it was a little bit too loud so I decided to fab up my own exhaust for MOAR POWWWAAA!!!
I got the idea off of the buellridersonline forum where there’s a post for “Brad’s Easy 1 Bend Exhaust”. I don’t know who Brad is, but I’ll buy him a beer if I ever meet him since his guide saved me from some trial and error.
I started with a simple U-bend I bought for less than 20 bucks that I would cut into a few pieces to make the main pipe. Thankfully, the Blast is a single cylinder bike so that keeps things pretty simple. This pipe is then cut right in the middle and then 1 inch past the end of the bend.
On this end with the extra inch, I welded on a half inch sleeve that became the flange seat thing.
Then I could bolt it up to the engine with the flange from the stock exhaust. Then I spent a long time drinking a beer and playing with the alignment of the two “J’s” using my highly calibrated eyeball to get the alignment just right then tack welded them together.
It looks a lot closer to the front tire in that pic than it really is. Anyway, then I took it to the bench to fully weld it once I was happy with the alignment.
I forgot to take many pictures of the next few steps, but the gist is I added a lower support plate and a straight section of pipe onto the end and welded it all up and cleaned her up a bit
BOOM! look at that awesome race header! Obviously I went ahead and fired up the bike without a muffler just to see what it sounds like.
It spat fire and my ears were nearly bleeding, It was Awesome!
At this point you should take a selfie... The last thing I need to do is find a suitable muffler for this beast. I couldn’t find anything good locally so I welded a few patches onto the old muffler and put it back on so I could ride until I get a muffler for the new pipe.
Overall not too bad for less than $20. Sadly the mufflers I’ve seen are kinda pricey so I’m still trying to figure out what to do there.
Once I finish it up I’ll probably re-jet the carb then she should be a little more peppy. I love my MR2, but working on a motorcycle is a lot cheaper and a lot easier.
