Got to say, those Disco Axles are awesome. Got up to 70 mph with out needing to engage the over drive, and I didn’t feel like I was going to die lol.

Clearance being what it is with the fenders, though, we’re looking at using Disco/Rangey pumpkins on our 109 and using late III axle shafts and/or Series spiders in the Rangey carriers. Shouldn’t be unstable with the longer wheelbase anyway.

Wait, there’s something on the Disco that’s good?

Mechanicals are pretty much a copy/paste from the Range Rover Classic for the Disco I. Development costs were pretty much nil, and the mechanicals are reasonably solid with some exceptions as long as you watch the engine like a hawk. It’s the electrics and interior that are shady as all fuck. Disco II, more of the above only worserer and with some new and exciting mechanical diseases.

Ahh, was just automatically thinking Disco II. I always assumed all Discos were Disco IIs. So are the first gen ones not too bad, or just not too bad relative to some other Land Rovers?

First gen ones are just a cheap short wheelbase Range Rover Classic with a shoddy “modern” body/interior. Not far beyond normal LR levels of fail.

Highly recomend it, although my dad built a jig so converting Disco Axles to fit under Series trucks are a pretty easy job.

I didn’t realize what a case of Mishmasherson’s Disease the IIa had apart from the Disco axles. Mid-year in-front-of-breakfast valance, II or non-NAS front fender ends, Late IIa sill panels, outer fenders, wipers, and dash vents, etc. Auxiliary fuel tank!

Basically, we’re sticking with the narrow track width housings and using late III parts to make it happen. Shouldn’t even need any welding, just the right mix of parts. As to brakes, we haven’t really decided yet - I think there are parts available for converting the Rangey brakes as one option.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a mut which adds to the character and why we love it so much. I have a hunch it was orginially a Bug Eye that the old hippie we bought it from converted back to center headlights.

That was my guess as well. It’s the answer to “WTF”with the fewest parts needing swapped, and the fender fronts being a different shade than the tops and sides and having been pop-riveted on the visible edge speaks to them being a part that got swapped and not the outers/etc. Where’d he get non-NAS fender fronts, though?

My guess is from England back in the 80’s when he didn’t have to worry about DOT regulations anymore.

They’re full floating axles and way stronger than the orginial ones. You’d have to try really hard to twist a half shaft on this light a truck. It’s only 2900 lbs which is almost 1700 lbs lighter than a Disco 1 the axles came from.

I’m curious, is the bolt pattern on the Series III axle housing the same as the Disco 1 stub axle? Might be a little far in terms of Mishmasherson, HOWEVER fitting disk brakes would be a breaze. I’ve had to hang on the ancors in the Shorty and I was chewing on the stearing wheel.

My guess is no otherwise it would have been done before but just thinking out loud about it.
