Yes, folks, I have driven the world’s fastest car.

No, it is not a Bugatti or a Ferrari. Not even a Lamborghini or a Porsche.

It is the.....rental car. A 2013 Toyota Camry SE equipped with the roaring 4 cylinder engine and a neck-snapping 6 speed automatic.

Ask me anything about it. I daily drive a 2011 SAAB 9-5 for reference

Is it as great a place to be as people claim? Is it as soul sucking and boring to drive as they claim?

I have actually left many skidmarks.

Sadly, it wasn’t on purpose. The tires are bald, the power peak is peaky, and the rpm range is short and high. Translation: trying to leave with some degree of reasonable progress results in wheelspin, slamming into the next gear, and immediately losing any forward momentum.

Also averaged about 30 mpg

No, no, no, no, nooooooope. Skidding around a on-ramp while going 30 mph? Nope, hell no.

A lot actually. Quick to extend, slow to compress equates a lot of air. Even when going over a twig is like jumping railroad tracks at 100 mph

It is simply magical. The engine and chassis works beautifully together.

Let’s put this way, I have discovered the eighth circle of Hell.

The steering is so overboosted and vague. The brakes only has an inch of travel and no matter how much force is applied, you will stop the same way...you stop....ish

Frankly I don’t understand why these are so popular

I wonder if average owners/drivers of these cars like them this way. That overboosted and vague steering sounds reminiscent of the big old boats that were excellent highway cruisers that we have long-since lost. The brakes could explain the strange way that Toyota drivers tend to drive by “brake check”, too...

How is the interior? I thought a gen or two ago they were pretty nice inside. Generic, but fairly premium looking/feeling. They’re way outside my style, so I don’t track them closely, but it’s interesting to see what 80% of drivers aspire to.

I think you are right - they appeal to a certain older demographic. Lots of leg room, but buttons on everything, fairly conservative looking, etc.

For a car that size... that’s actually not bad.

The interior is actually nice apart from the shit stains from previous renters. There are stitchings on the dashboard.

Basically the 80% of drivers who bought them are saying “I hate myself and I’ve given up on any resemblance of living”.

No. If I am honest, xwd is Saab’s biggest mistake. It is far too unreliable and too picky. It is an effective system...when it works. Beside it being a SAAB, it is already naturally good in the snow, winter tires are just icing on the cake.

Actual stitching or a skeuomorph? A lot of companies do the latter now, because they believe that is more premium than accepting their materials.

I believe this is something they claim about parents that buy minivans, too. Most cars are not designed for enthusiasts, they’re designed for people that can/want to buy new cars.

I had a rental camry last year at some point. Then I recently had a rental sonata. The Sonata was just way better at everything. Well other than a competition for which one is more boring looking, then the Camry would win. Only problem was I could not induce wheel spin no matter how much I would floor it and turn the wheel hard. The Camry went into wheel spin with any amount of throttle lol.
