Some dumbass with no spacial awareness ran over a large piece of tire and flung it at my wife’s car at highway speeds. It left black marks on the hood and I’m wondering if anyone knows a safe (relatively easy?) way to remove that so I can assess to see if there is any paint damage?

It also cracked the headlight in a few places. Am I going to have to replace the entire headlight assembly ($1000+) or is there a way to just replace the plastic case over it all? The vehicle in question is a 2011 Lincoln MKX.

Thanks for any info anyone might have!

You can replace just the lens, but you probably can’t do it yourself. At least not very easily. No way the whole housing would be over a grand, though... At least I doubt it.

Tar and glue remover or isopropyl alcohol/panel wipe will make light work of that. Alternatively some polish and a some time will take it off.

The tire scuffs should polish off easy enough. The headlamp will be the kicker. No manufacturers service the lens individually. You might be able to file an “uninsured motorist” claim against your insurer (lower deductible than collision and losses aren’t held against your record/premium rates).

Thank God, I had just looked it up on fordparts.com and all that really came up was the entire headlight assembly which got me freaked a bit! I will definitely let someone qualified to do that!

Just checked fordparts.com and depending on the trim level and the type of lights, yes anywhere from $500 for halogen to $1050 for the HID with adaptive.

Yeah, that’s what worries me...I guess I’ll call the shop and see what they have to say about it!

I’m not 100% sure where to find just the lens, though... :/

Yeah, that’s what I saw too and we do have the adaptive lights...

Polish is harder going and having a dedicated tar and glue remover is always good to keep in your detailing arsenal (also comes in handy around the house from time to time).

Light polish and clay I’d think would do 8t.
