Why is she upgrading, and from what?

I strongly recommend a Nokia (or Microsoft, same phones, Microsoft just too over Nokia’s phone business last year) Lumia, 830-series or higher (e.g. 920, 925, 930, etc ) if she wants something akin to the One M#-class, or 640, 730, or 735 for something less spec-intensive. My mom has a Lumia 920, and she loves it. It’s a bit older now, but it - and its successors - offer NFC, wireless charging, stupendous signal reception, amazing ease-of-use (she’s NEVER had to ask me how to do something, but has asked for tips and tricks, and enjoys sharing when she’s figured something more advanced out like making an NFC tag to activate Car Mode when she gets in her car), an excellent native keyboard, good battery life, durable, easy to hold, and - her favorite feature - colorful, as hers is a pleasant red shade so she never has to worry about misplacing it and not recognizing it, even without her glasses. Plus Windows 10 later this year, as well as Microsoft software like OneDrive, OneNote, Office, and Outlook so everything from any computer she uses with her Microsoft account is also available on her phone. She recently started using the built-in Wallet program to pay for stuff via NFC at her favorite coffee shop, mostly because the phone’s easier to grab out of her purse than the debit card or cash, due to her arthritis. She says it makes her feel like “one cool grandma” whenever she does stuff like that, haha.

I am happy with my S6, even though it doesn’t have a SD card. Rumor has it Samsung is going to drop the price on it due to lagging sales.

I picked it over the m9 at launch as my razr max HD turned into a bootlooping brick and I wasn’t going to buy a 6 month old or more phone.

What does she currently have? First smartphone?

I would avoid Android if her first smartphone. It’s a good OS if you already know what to do, otherwise it’s a royal pain in the ass for noobs. You will have to be her tech support.

iPhones are slightly easier to figure out, but Apple isn’t perfect either.

Windows phones are actually quite easy to learn and the OS is stable and secure. There is an lack of apps right now, but I am hopeful that will change with Windows 10 mobile this fall.

So basically if it’s her first smartphone you’re stuck being tech support and there aren’t any perfect options.

If she’s had a smartphone before, don’t change it too much.

I deal with people and their phones professionally, so I have some experience with how parents and grandparents deal with their devices.

The new Moto G? It looks pretty snazzy, and you’d get NFC. I’m waiting for the new Nexus to be announced before I make my decision. I do rather like the look of the OnePlus 2, but the screen’s a little big for me, and I’d really miss wireless charging. I don’t use NFC much now, but if Google ever actually roll out Wallet/Pay here, I’d regret not having it.
