I contacted the seller for a testdrive. What should I look out for? 1995 Peugeot 306 2.0L convertible. It’s said to be in great condition, with the exception of the rear window.
And yes, this too has Pininfarina badges. I seem to be a Pininfarina whore, considering the other Pininfarina cars I own(ed) this year.

It is French. French food is delicious. Ergo, the car is delicious.

From my experience with French cars I can confirm. I owned 4 simultaneously until a few weeks ago, and this 306 would be the new #4.

Fifth Gear made a “used Pininfarina” episode and one of those was featured (I think), the episode is probably on youtube and they talked about the mechanical/electrical foibles, the top is the main thing to check probably.

They looked at a GTI-6 version, but some of the information should still be relevant.

It can be on older convertibles.

You could argue that it’s Italian, because made by Pininfarina.

Rust for one, and check that the hood is still OK (new ones aren’t cheap) because that’s an easy way in for water.
Check all the electrical thingies.

No GTI-6 version of the convertible, the 2.0 is the biggest engine available. Interesting little video though, I was looking at Alfa Romeo Spiders as well. They’re a bit more expensive than the 306 convertibles though, and are sure to be more trouble prone than the cockroach-like 306s.

Almost.
Have a Turkish built Corolla. Manual only, available as a diesel, on sale at a dealer near me.

One of the only french cars I would actually like to own. Never knew they had such big engines, that’s awesome. I love them stock, but there are some kits made for them. I like the Dimma kit:
Are you going to keep it or are you going to resell it soon? I’d love to hear the experience you have with the car.

I intent to flip it, like I did with the CTI. I still made €800 on the CTI, despite all the misfortune (costing a total of €1200 of outsourced work) I had with that car. I enjoyed myself with that car though. It lives back in France now, with some overweight 70 year old Frenchman who loves it.
It’s still summer, so I want to try one more convertible.

Technically I’ve never owned a 90s Peugeot in my life. My 406c is from 2000, the 205s are both from 1988. The BX is a ‘90, but that’s no Peugeot.

They’re nicer cars than Miatas, but aren’t RWD, which spoils some of the fun. It’s a 4 person cruiser instead of a sportscar seating 2. Still though, the 306 (hatch) was regarded as one of the best driving cars of its segment in its time.

The rear suspension has bearings (and I don’t mean wheel bearings) that can wear out. They are a bit annoying to rebuild. I have no idea how long lifetime they should have. It probably depends on the local road conditions and driving habits.

How do you notice rear suspension bearing wear?

An “acquaintance” of mine had one (might have been his mother’s). He tried to drive it home from one of our Beerfests. Sideswiped several cars on the first 100 meters then gave up and sat next to it and waited for the cops to arrive.
Useless anecdotal stuff, I know. But I drove a relatively new R19 convertible (built by Karmann in Osnabrück, but that obviously didn’t make any difference) in the 90s and I could feel the body flex just cruising along, so Borsuq’s idea of driving one wheel up a kurb and seeing how the doors behave might be a good idea.
But apart from that, from now on it will be “sell a car - buy another car” or I will start an intervention. I will soon be closer to you!!!!!!!!!
Repeat after me: “I am duurtlang, and I have a problem. I am a carholic!”

Well, I have sold the CTI, spent far too much on repairs and still made a nice profit. So why not?

The rear suspension might be giving weird noises during driving. The suspension should operate quietly if everything is in order. Some noises can be unrelated to the bearings though. The shock absorbers can give some noises but they are fairly cheap to fix. They have bushings that can wear out. My friend had this issue with a 306 and one of her lower end bushings had plenty of play.
If you could lift the rear wheels up you could also try to find some play in bearings by twisting them with hands. This is easier if a strong guy tries to twist the lifted wheel and the other tries to feel the suspension pivot point with fingers. With a properly placed finger you can find play fairly accurately.
Today I was checking my friend’s BX rear suspension problems. It had slightly worn suspension bearings but also worn out wheel bearing. The inside of one rear wheel was already touching the inner fender.

Well, it’s a 306 so mechanically it should be bulletproof (I know the diesels are, not sure about the petrol engines). But you shouldn’t have any problems since it probabl doesn’t have the first gen engine (ie the first HDI where not that good). Part can be found super easily because it’s a 90’s Peugeot and you can find the majority of the parts in the rest of the range as well as in Citroën’s range from then. And if you have to change the engine if anything happens, you can probably find one for cheap.
I wanted to get a 306, but went for a Xsara instead. In France 306’s go for insane prices... I paid the Xsara €4300, but it’s a VTS trim, full optionned, 2.0l HDI 110, from 2001 and had 150 000 km when I got it. Back then it was impossible to find a 306 in the same state for less than €5500. The one I found around the same price as the Xsara had at least 220 000km, and some even had a new engine put in while the chassis had close to 300k.... Cheaper ones where just in an awful state...
