Kinja'd!!!

It’s the French-built !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It’s 4WD, with individual electric motors at each wheel. It has 4 wheel steering. It has independent suspension for each wheel as well as the axle itself. I’ve not seen a vehicle like this before in my life.

Is it bad that right away my mind went to thinking about how to build one that was street-legal and car-sized? Surely it can’t be that hard.

Here’s a car sized one, not street legal though

The French SWINCAR rides on a soft, comfortable, cochon-ey suspension. Hon hon hon.

I thought, at least in a few states, that as long as you put lights and tags on it and you built the rest, you could legalize it.

I think you could register it as a Low-Speed Vehicle in Wisconsin, if it had lights and a safety inspection.

I commented on this vehicle in an earlier post today...

It looks REALLY interesting... but the more I think about it, I wonder if the suspension geometry could be revised to raise the suspension elbow joint a bit.

Some of the videos show the vehicle dragging both the carriage bottom, and the suspension elbow joints on the ground. The carriage bottom could be lined with delrin or something, to act as a skid, and the structure is probably fine, but I would worry slightly about hitting a break-over angle wrong, and damaging a suspension elbow joint.

I just wonder if it would screw up the articulation very much to shorten the length of the upper arms, and curve or angle the lower arms a bit, to manipulate the static clearance, rather than just having it sprung and damped. (like a robotic arm’s automated elbow joint, instead)

The only thing is, I think it might limit maximum travel to do that.

Maybe the next design iteration will have stepper motors in the elbow joints that can torque the suspension articulation, and raise the static clearance a bit when needed, and offer variable ride height.

It looks a bit gangly, and I am not sure there is a way to cloak the suspension in some sort of fairing, without seriously compromising the amazing 4-axis articulation.

I had a college professor who theorized the future of the automobile would looks something like this

he went a bit further with some kinds of body made out of fabric that could be made rigid or flexible, but that was all
