At Oppositelock Farm Country Insurance you are in well placed appendages, and we are happy to insure your battleship and bridge, unfortunately, we cannot insure your Ford GT as its deemed an unacceptable hazard to our quarterly statements.

have you tried looking at limited/low mileage specific insurers? also if you are looking at buying a car as well you will be better of with a slightly obscure car as quite a lot of the cost tends to be based on statistics so because the fiesta is such a popular car and loads of them around it’s fact that they will be involved in more accidents than compared with a more obscure/less produced car

Have you tried an insurer that will put a ‘black box’ in your car? Also classic car insurance would be suitable and super cheap for that annual mileage, but normally the car has to be over 20 years old.

Black boxes are a con. I know nobody who has actually seen their insurance go down but plenty go up due to “aggressive driving tendencies” which are compulsory in London with a 1.0l.

Yeah, I’ve tried but no luck. I think living in London and being young overrules everything else.

Have you tried going with one of the smaller insurance brokers. Friends went with NFU and saved quite a bit. Alternatively are you a member of a car club or forum where similar vehicles owned by a similar age group may have the same issue?

Ah that’s a shame. Do you work for an agency? They may be able to offer a per mile contribution or put you on fleet insurance...?

I will look into that. The people I know either went Black Box (Bad idea) or went on Parent’s insurance (My parents don’t drive).

Find the odd cars. For example, Fiesta will be more expensive than a Fusion, Micra more expensive than a Note. Find the cars that da yoof dont buy.

Also, garages are more expensive than driveways (people claim for dings).

Up your annual milage, up your excess, add parents to policy. Also, sometimes fully comp is about the same price as 3rd party only.

Sadly though, there are certain postcodes which are just prohibitively expensive to insure in, plenty of which are in London.

That being said, I’m 24, design engineer, and my insurance is 600, soon to be 400 on a 1.8 focus, but I have now 5 years no claims. So the slightly odd cars does work.

Oh, or really odd, classic car insurance, which is anything pre about 1990 is very cheap, so look at retro cars. Hard to get the policies on confused etc, but speak to people direct and you might just get lucky (eg, MG Midget 1.5 was about £150 a year to insure with 4000 odd miles)

Well the only other option is to be a named driver on someone else’s policy, a parent would be best, but they have to be in on the joke just in case the insurers come knocking. The disadvantage is you won’t earn any no claims as a named driver, but you will stick a few more years under your belt for later policies. The other option is increase your stated annual mileage. I seem to remember that a very low annual mileage actually increases your insurance cost, so it may be worth seeing how 4-6k miles a year changes your price.

Unfortunately, you really have to get older and build up a no claims history.

Have you bought the car yet or are you still looking?

Price range of car?

Type of car?

Is engine size a factor?

Is the size of the car a factor?

Is the 'coolness' or 'streetcred' of the car a factor?

Still looking.

Total budget is £2,500 for everything.

Don’t mind.

Okay so South East London, low miles, £2,500 spending money.

Have you considered a Smart City? It's 0.7litre semi-automatic car, two seater, compact low foot print. 10 year old one are going for £1,000-1,500, CO2 Emissions 113g/Km (Tax Band C @111-120g/Km= £30 per year) for cars registered after 2001 and before 2010.

The Smart is a good call but there is one thing I do need which I forgot to mention. It has to have back seats and preferably 4+ doors since I will driving my parents to see my sister and my nieces.

Ouch, and putting them in a trailer isn’t a good (legal) idea. Doh.

There’s a Mitsubishi I, 0.66litre 5 door on a 2007 plate for £2,000 in London.

Sorry fella. I need to shower, sh** and shave and get to work.

No worries. You may want to look for a relatively old beater and offset the high insurance cost against it. You can get some good well maintained cars for quite cheap these days though many are cheap because of the VED on the emissions.

Good luck.
