Go to 1:27 if it doesn’t work right.

My own opinion? The guy in the Taco was (probably*) an idiot, and should have waited. However, the pedestrians should also have stopped. This guy is holding up traffic, and you have the chance to get him out of the way.

*Could be an innocent mistake. I’ve seen it done from the passenger seat/done it myself. One moments distraction, or not seeing them because of your A-pillar, and there you are holding people up.

Yeah, I think it falls a little bit on both parties. If I see something like that happen and I’m a pedestrian, I’ll just wait and let the guy go so it doesn’t completely screw up all the traffic in the intersection. And it’s happened to all of us as drivers, I’m sure. You miss time the light, or think traffic is going to go, so you start creeping into the intersection and then BAM, light changes.

Taco got cocky, thought he could run the light and get across.

He would have probably gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those meddling pedestrians.

edit—- Damn, I just watched it again. If the Taco’s left turn arrow went to red the same time as the left turn light (1:29) from our side of the intersection, he entered the intersection (1:33) four seconds after the light turned green.

It’s pretty close. Most of the blame falls to the Taco, for sure. But if you watch close, the pedestrians are starting to cross while the aroow is still on. They are crossing when the car before is finishing his turn.

Being the Taco, the pedestrian, or the traffic?

When I’m on foot, and I have the legal right of way, I will take that right whenever it’s safe and practical to do so. I will get myself through the intersection as quickly and safely as possible, and I’d be hard-pressed to give a shizz about someone blocking the box (or other traffic being held up). At best, that Tacoma driver would be my #2 concern, not my #1 concern. (Pedestrians are the slowest and most vulnerable users of the street; I think it’s fair that they have a heightened level of protection.)

Traffic.

True enough.

My way of looking at it is, who am I holding up, then who has the right of way. If there was no cross traffic (or maybe 1 or 2 cars) I’d cross and to hell with the Taco. In this case, where many people are being held up, I think I’d wait.

“But if you watch close, the pedestrians are starting to cross while the aroow is still on. They are crossing when the car before is finishing his turn.”

We’re going to have to just disagree, because I’m seeing something different..

At 1:29, the left turn arrow goes out.

Kinja'd!!!

Four seconds later (1:33), the main light goes green, and two cars have already entered the intersection. One is just about through, one is half-way, and the Taco just turned the wheel, hoping he could make it too.

Kinja'd!!!

Then one second later, (1:34), the pedestrians start crossing (on both sides of the street). FIVE SECONDS after the Taco’s light went red, and one second after cross traffic got the green.

Kinja'd!!!

Unfortunately, I can’t see any crossing lights to say if the pedestrians jumped the signal or not. That would address any blame the pedestrians had.

How are lights timed in Toronto? Does five seconds seems like a reasonable delay to light the walk signal?

Nvm, I wasn’t seeing right... you are correct.

As far as the walk signal, I have no idea, except that they usually are the same time as the green light. I think the yellows are supposed to be 8 seconds. How far the yellow-green cycle is separated I don’t know.

Now let’s talk about how NOT to behave if someone is blocking the intersection.

Wow. Uh... I have no other words for the stupidity.

However... (and don’t take this like I’m siding with the cyclist, I’m not, they were being idiotic) If the road ahead is too backed up to allow you to clear the intersection, you aren’t supposed to enter.

One thing I was taught when I was learning to drive that the biker needs to be taught, is you think through your maneuvers this way:

1. Is it safe?

2. Is it legal? (personally I like to bump this to #3, and add “who am I obstructing?” as #2)

This guy started with is it legal (which I would assume it was. The light was green, and there was technically enough room), and never bothered with is it safe, which it obviously wasn’t, as the person in the car could (and did) move.

All round stupidity from everone engaged, and one of them happened to be a hothead.
