I love my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It is great at pretty much everything. But I know it can be better. It can look better. Sound better. perform better. I have a general idea of how to do these things, but no specific knowledge. Below is a list of things i want to do to it. If you have any more ideas, or know how i can specifically do any of the things below, please let me know!
Replace current head lights with LED/BIXENON ones (maybe even LED taillights)
Restore any of the horsepower the car has lost (it’s probably making much less than the 260 it made in 1995)
Update the engine to the facelifted 1998-1999 model specifications (290 horsepower and 300 lb-feet of torque vs. 260/270)
replace some exterior/ interior trim with higher trim / facelifted LS parts
replace the wheels with higher trim LS ones
Black out the grille (maybe the badges and wheels as well, but unsure, could also replace the chrome trim with a gold one)
replace some interior components with higher trim / newer LS ones
Replace tires for ones with more grip
find some way to improve the 0-60 time, as 260 horsepower and 3650 lbs should be much faster than 7.9
push wheel horsepower to over 300
improve handling and ride quality

Enjoy it.
I would refresh the seats and detail it and call it good.

Investing in the driver is usually good. A friend of mine did an SCCA starting line school recently and really enjoyed it. Lots of driving and coaching in your car.

Sawzall the exhaust. Or if your car is not rusty unbolt the exhaust right behind the cat, thats the best spot.

As far as the newer motor; your computor would need to be from the newer model meaning you go from obd-1 to obd-2. And a different wiring harness would probly be necessary. ie: not worth it.
As far as gripier tires and different rims, I suggest looking at stock rims for other cars due to the common use of the 5×114.3 bolt pattern.(350Z’s most lexus’s ect) Doing this would leave you with a wider rim and more options.
A higher flow exhaust would allow the the motor to reach its listed hp figures.(headers help most)

Before working about modification start with getting it to proper running order. Upgrade what you can as you replace worn out bits but your best to just focus on replacing wear items first. Give it a tune up, plugs wires, all fluids. Brakes, suspension bits if needed. Any other buts like half shafts, bushings, belts, pulleys. Keep it running and reliable. Once it’s nice and sorted you’ll find extras may not be needed or wanted but if they are now you have and extra solid car to put them on.

Upgrade the brakes. I think calipers and rotors off a LS430 fit easily.

Tune up should help bring back some power. It would take a shit ton of work to convert it over to the updated version. I would just upgrade the exhaust, intake, and maybe give it a tune. But, the best part about the 1UZ, is the stock block and internals will handle over 500 crank hp on boost.

Please, for the love of all that is good and holy, if you go with bi xenon get proper projectors and don’t just slap HIDs in there. I have a nearly irresistiblee urge to run every jackass who puts HIDs in reflector housings off the road and beat them to death with their own cheap Chinese eBay ballasts.

o.O
From a fellow LS400 guy to another...I just need to ask why?
The car is extremely well engineered and one of the greatest luxo-barges ever. You have a gem and maybe you don’t appreciate it?
You are talking about modifying and replacing engine, suspension, interior, exterior (Blacking out badges and grille is good for street cred, but only to 15 year olds), and tearing the car up like it is as simple as clicking a few buttons in Need for Speed Underground 2.
Replace tires to a more perfomance-oriented ones when your current set wears out. Maybe replace your old, worn out bushings with polyurethane ones. These are the two simple things that I have done. Other than that, nothing needs to be torn up. Your 0-60 times aren’t all that fast because the transmission is not geared for acceleration. The diff is tall and the gears start out tall too, 1st and 2nd feel like 2nd and 3rd for other cars. The shifts are smooth and slushy, like it’s supposed to be.
It is your car and if you want to molest it, go right ahead. But the money you sink in to that car will be more than just selling your current car and buying a later generation LS400.

Once you get it sorted out and running properly, let the engine breath better and you’ll get more performance. That was never built to be a fast car though.
I would find some more modern Lexus wheels to change up the looks and give you more rubber. Good tires always helps. I would also look into getting slightly stiffer and shorter springs. A mild drop would look killer. Especially with newer wheels.
Find some good forums and see what other people have done. I know there is the Lexus Owners forum. Start there perhaps.

FYI that power bump came from higher compression (new pistons) and variable valve timing, so unless you’re going to swap heads and the computer and get new pistons I don’t think you’re gonna hit 300hp. I would suggest a freer flowing exhaust for better sound. Remember, you bought a luxury car, not a sports car.

Don’t listen to these guys telling you that you can’t do this stuff. The 95 and the 99 are both LS400, so it’s all plug and play and bolts right in.
You should just swap out the motor and interior for the newer ones. Since you won’t be driving it during the swap you can do both at the same time and save time.
