Is there any way to find service records of servicemen from the Second World War who weren’t killed in action? Or will I have to submit a request to have them released? My buddy’s grandfather passed away the other day, and we’re trying to track some information down. Any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Forgot to add, here are some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from the RCAF as thanks.

You’re talking in Canada, right? A friend of mine has done extensive research on American servicemen from WW II (including her grandfather - she found mine, too), but I don’t know whatever site(s) she uses would work for the Canadian military.

Has to be something close to what you are looking for in the veterans affairs website.

Fortunately/unfortunately, that’s only for those KIA. Already tried it. But thanks for your help!

There is a Wiki list of WW2 veterans, might be useful for you.

Unfortunately not, either. That’s for the famous ones.

Probably not. Different databases and laws around privacy.

I am good for something. YAY. This is the form you must fill out. It shall be answered in 30 days. There is no online databse because records after 1918 are protected by the privacy act.

Yeah, I figured the Privacy Act would play into this. Which is a good thing. Thanks Boss.

Have you tried getting in touch with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the U.K.?
https://www.gov.uk/search?q=war+r…
https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-p…
https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/records.asp?SE…
The FCO and MOD keep massive records of British and Commonwealth service personnel going back centuries so this would be one of my first ports of call.
Canadian sourced info

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canmil/ww2/
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/m…
http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/search
Try to gain as much info as you can on the person you are searching.
Name in full (including any possible service nicknames gained in service),
Date of birth,
Date of active service,
Serial number during service,
Regiment (or similar),
Any known areas of conflict served in,
Were they injured at any point during service,
Any photographs or insignia from during or after service,
If you know their service details you may be able to get access or information from the Battalion’s (or similar) own record archive.

No worries. We tend to keep records on everything from weather to taxes going back a very long way.
Also try the National Archives in Kew, England as they may have something. They have 1,000 years of records. Though it's primarily an England and Wales archive there may be some over lap.
