What on earth is the point of that?
Autonomous shipping... ok
Autonomous car retrieval... I can see it...
Autonomous racing? WHY? isn’t the whole point that it is a human + equipment contest? It certainly serves little practical use, aside from being fun and skill-building for the driver and team.
Without a human element, it might as well be computers competing virtually in a simulation against each other, with no potential impact on the physical world of an errant piece of equipment becoming a hazardous projectile.

It’s just a cool new robot contest. It wouldn’t be a sport anymore, but I still think it’d be fascinating. You could run cars way faster without all the restrictions of keeping people safe. You would still have team command with risk assessment that would be part of the strategy (that’s already a defining part of modern racing). Also you’d get all the gory crowdpleasing crashes without having to worry about casualties.
Overall I think it’d be really cool to see ultra-aerodynamic hyperintelligent speed machines careening around popular courses.
