I interpolated the best data I could find and came up with these figures. The 2.8 rocks the house down low but with only 181 peak hp on tap...its not going to be any kind of fast. That having been said, it will have killer range, and still get great mileage loaded down so it would make an ideal overland platform if you could stomach the $3700 premium you aren’t getting back anytime soon.

I should also note that this engine is pretty well proven and it is a good engine. Maintenance will be higher than a gasser but its still a good motor. Also, because its been around the block, tuning potential exists already. Its capped at 369 lbs-ft because that’s 500 nm (the recommended torque limit on the 6 speed) but Australian tuners are getting 190 hp and 430 lbs-ft from them with just a chip tune...so there is that.

This is really good. I've been enjoying the explainers (even though honestly I can't get all the way through them), keep it up.

I really think there’s a decent amount to come out of that engine with just a proper tune (not chip).

Where did you get the curves and numbers? I’d really like to see the 1200-3600 average of the LH9.

I found the peak numbers, looked at curves from Australian tuners and tried to follow the map profile.

Yep, this engine will be great for commuting purposes as well as highway driving. It may feel like it has a lot of oomf, but it won’t be fast. Just like older VW TDIs, they feel plenty powerful, but outright acceleration is lagging.

As far as towing, I think it would be a great choice for pulling something like a small enclosed trailer, but pulling 7,500 lbs will be pushing it.

7500 lbs in the hills will be a little slow, but...on the plus side...You wont loose much steam at high elevations vs the V6. Going over a 10000 foot pass, the V6 will be screaming along near at 7000 rpm with only 210 horses, and the diesel will be quietly doing its thing at 2800 rpm with 181 hp.

Found one. It actually looks like the 2.8 has a better 1200-3600 average power than my LH9

I would hope so, its making 369 lbs-ft by 2000 rpm.

Solution: small turbo(s) on the gas V6.

What is; how do I make even more power with even worse economy?

Fine, turbo just big enough to drive around out of boost and save fuel. Point is, HP & TQ both above 350.

not as good as you might think

we’ve replaced a few already.

balance shaft gears chewing out sending shrapnel through the engine.

I’ve got about 300 lb/ft at 2000 rpm and it’s a pretty flat curve, but yeah, the 2.8’s over 300 lb/ft for almost the entire rev range. So, 90% of the time the diesel should be quicker.

Yikes.
