This is what the rear brakes look like on the rear of my wife’s Escape. I believe the rear side of the disc looks the same. My brother-in-law are hoping to fix this on our own. We just did his girlfriends Camry. Hers turned out to just be a couple of crapped up slide bolts. These look worse and I was fearing the Calipers are frozen. I don’t really know. The braking feels fine except for when cornering, it kinda feels squishy/chunky but its doesn’t feel like the ABS engaging. no squealing or anything.

Looks like they’ll need resurfacing possibly.

Do you know your way around brakes?

Identify a stuck caliper by taking it off and trying to push the piston back in. You either can or cant.

Also, pads, rotors and do the fluid while youre in there. If you need to do a caliper, it just makes it easier to drain the fluid. Also, depending on the age of the car, its long past overdue to change the flex line.

It will add up, but its way cheaper than a major issue. 4 wheel disc brakes are pretty easy anyway, you guys should be able to make quick work of that in a day.

Depending on how old that car is, the condition of the fluid in the reservoir, and the price of parts, I would want to R&R calipers/rotors/pads/flex lines.

But that’s just me.

There’s a chance you may find the issue and save the caliper, but you’re looking at pads and rotors at a minimum.

Wow. That’s definitely not coming out enough. It’s weird that it’s on both sides, though. Maybe something wrong with your brake master cylinder or proportioning valve?

I wouldn’t expect both rear calipers to fail the same way. I’m thinking master cylinder.

For starters, those rotors are shot and would definitely need replacement.

+1 on JGrabowMSt’s comment too

its an 06 with 92k. I was certainly planning on pad ans rotors at a minimum. I’ll probably get into the investigation part tomorrow, checking the piston and slide bolts. The flex line just goes from the caliper to the frame right? not back to the reservoir or master cylinder or anything right??

i was hoping it doesn;t go that far back. I thought it was wierd that the both rears are similarly not working but the front is fine.

i’ve done pads and rotors before. thats about it.

Correct. There should be hard lines going back to the master cylinder.

If it hasn’t had a fluid service in a while, do that as well.

I just went through the same thing on my TL. The left rear caliper stopped working, which seemed to overwork and kill my right rear caliper.

Kinja'd!!!

I replaced rotors, pads, and calipers on both sides. It wasn’t as bad to fix as I thought, until my parking brake fell apart when I pulled off one of the rotors :( I should have loosened the tension of the parking brake first

Did you try a few hard stops from moderately high speed, try to get the ABS to engage when you do these? It seriously looks like the brakes are not really engaging.

I recall someone else on here with a 150k escape not long ago asking if it was normal that they had never replaced their rear pads. Apparently these cars have a tendency to barely use their rear brakes.

yea, that doesn;t seem bad and it makes sense that its one side. It worries me that both side look stuck. It just seems odd that both would get stuck at the same time and makes me think its something more

i havnt. The only time I ever drive that car is when the wife and kids are in there. She doesn;t like me experimenting with them all in the car.

If she always drives gently and the car has a heavy front brake bias, which it probably does, I wouldn’t be surprised if there really is not issue with the system at all.

Either way though like everyone else said, I’m sure some maintenance wouldn’t hurt, checking the flex lines and flushing the fluid.

is it difficult to do the brake fluid? its has 92k miles 2006

The inside of both of my front rotors looked like that. Could never figure out why it was only one side. Anyway for me the caliper slides were ok. Pistons were fine. Filing, cleaning, and greasing the part of the caliper that the pads ride on top of fixed it.

no, it’s not hard to do it. Just learn how to do it via google before you try, or you could be doing it a few times.

if the caliper is locked up, the wheel is normally pretty hot after a ride.

Feel the wheels on yours (should be cool) after a ride, then feel hers, in particular the ones that look like above. If they’re hot- caliper is most likely stuck.
