Because if we don’t buck the trend of rational thought, who will?

I love target/recreational shooting, but man I wish crazy fucks weren’t able to get their hands on guns legally.

The Scottish panel is wrong. No devolved Parliament back then, so the second-last panel would have been ‘gosh, chaps’.

Seriously, I look at the US and all I can see is that the people who actually own guns are the reason guns should be illegal, and the people like you, eh, who cares?

This x1000.

But the whole system is fucked, and no one wants to address it. In theory most of these people should have been stopped (the CT shooter the exception since he murdered his mother and took her guns), but the NICS system is so backed up, and no one wants to put money into it to update it, and there’s virtually no accountability for the proper agencies reporting to it.

Unfortunately I think it’s a stupid cultural thing. It seems like just in my lifetime (though I’m sure the old timers would say it’s been going on a lot longer) that rational discourse has disappeared, replaced by hyperpartisanism. Every single issue is politicized and cast as an Us vs. Them debate. And then I don’t know why but people seem to take a source of pride in flaunting their stance on the issue. The more extreme, the better.

I work as a range safety officer at a local range sometimes, and by and large most of the people that come in are completely normal people. They are hunters, target shooters, or just out for recreation. They could be your neighbors, family members, or coworkers - just completely normal, run of the mill people. The ones you are seeing, sadly the ones “representing” US gun culture, are definitely not the norm. Also, they are the worst people to have on the range because they are usually idiots and incapable of following basic instructions or safety protocols.

As a personal rule, pedophiles, and I mean ALL PEDOPHILES , must die by rape. And with 50 bullet holes all over the body for good measure. And immolation of the body. Or by amphitheater-style feeding to hungry big cats and vultures. Either will do.

This is absolutely true. I’m not into and don’t own guns, though I appreciate them as machines and enjoy target shooting when I’ve had the chance. One of my techs is an RSO, and another of my guys is an avid shooter, and while it’s alarming to me how many weapons they’ve accumulated, they’re normal dudes with families and it’s just what they’re into. They have a ton of guns, I have a bunch of cars. The gun zealots are a pain in their ass too.

Not long ago I overheard a guy talking about hauling ass to the gun shop to buy ARs immediately after a school shooting because he (and his wife) were convinced that Obama was going to take their guns away this time. Almost literally foaming at the mouth. These people are the problem, and unfortunately they are the ones driving the political “discourse,” if it can be called that, because they yell the loudest. Like the joke about guitarists making up for lack of talent with volume. The people the NRA pander to. It’s complete bullshit, and seems to be a uniquely American phenomenon.

I didn’t grow up in a “gun” house - we had a couple guns but nobody ever used them - but somehow I developed a love for shooting early on, shooting BB guns with my friends, going to the range with them and their dads, and getting my rifle merit badge in Boy Scouts. I’m an engineer, so I share your same appreciation for them as mechanical devices, and I love all types of target shooting - trap/skeet/sporting clays, defensive pistol competition, speed steel, long range/high power, 3 gun, etc. I’m not a big hunter though - I have friends and family who do and don’t have a problem with it, just not something I was exposed to and don’t have an interest in.

You made the obvious connection that a lot of people miss - you have cars, they have guns. A lot of people seem to get concerned when someone has a lot of guns (I’m sure a few of my coworkers think I’m a nut), but you can only use one at a time (well, maybe 2 handguns but that’s dumb), but I just don’t see quantity being a big deal. Again, I think it’s a reaction to bad press over a few nuts who are stockpiling ARs and ammo to fight Obama, or whatever. The implication, I think, is no different than saying you’re more likely to run over a child getting off the school bus because you have a bunch of cars. There are dozens of different types of guns and hundreds of different calibers, and they all serve different purposes, so its natural for even a semi-casual shooter to wind up with at least a few. Some of us (myself included) collect guns of certain types or vintages - it’s really no different than someone might collect baseball cards.

As for the people driving discourse, it swings both ways. For every “gun nut” out there who thinks the “gub’ment” is coming to take away their guns, there is an “anti” who wants to line out the 2nd Amendment, confiscate all, and I mean every single one, of the guns, and melt them in a furnace. And that’s the problem, the loudest voices are also the crazy ones and they are leaving no room for rational discussion. So organizations like the NRA have doubled down, whipping up a frenzy of fear and hatred. To counter this, the other side of the fence is doing the exact same thing. If you don’t support the NRA, you hate freedom and America. If you own a gun, you sit around all day and think about how you can best murder scores of children. It’s completely ridiculous and both sides share the blame.

Well said. I was raised by hippies, but dad had a BB gun and a .22 I got to learn a little with, and some gun-owning friends who have known my folks for decades are surprised to find out I’m not in the “melt ‘em down” camp. I’m just sure as hell not in the “more guns are the answer camp.” The hobby angle seems obvious to me, for rational people. It’s horses for courses with guns and cars. You don’t hunt with a shotgun, you don’t shoot clay with a pistol. I don’t bomb backroads with my Fairlane, don’t pull a trailer with my 2002, and I won’t be autocrossing my truck any time soon. And I don’t road rage them into crowds.

I want to have official looking 2016 election bumper stickers made that say Facts & Reason 2016 or Calm The Fuck Down 2016. You’re absolutely right, the normal people in the middle, like us, are being forced out of the debate by the zealots on both sides.

Queue the train of people who have no experience with firearms to demonstrate why no one should have them.
