Ok follow me on this. My next car is down to one of these two. It might seem like a simple choice (moar power), but it isn’t that simple.
2016 Chevy SS - final year for the Holden Commodore version SS. Manual transmission! And rumored to have a small power bump to 425HP, and slight appearance changes like black wheels and updated fascia to make it look slightly less like a rental Malibu. The thing is, the SS is the closest thing to an E39 M5 today, and perhaps the closest thing to sport sedan perfection - manual trans, big NA V8, RWD, mag ride and enough space for 4 regular sized adults to travel in comfort. They very likely won’t make any more like this, ever. The new Alfa Giulia is like the ATS-V - both smaller, manual trans, RWD, and turbo V6.
2016 CTS-V - the first year of V3. 640HP luxury super sedan. Automatic only and 2x the $ of the SS. It is the true 4-door Corvette. Supercharged LT4. Laden with technology and go-fast parts. Journalists can’t write about it until Aug 3rd, but I fully expect it to be the dominant super sedan in the class when it comes to performance and overall driving dynamics (we will see).
For some reason, I’m drawn to the manual SS, although I know the V3 will be incredible. Is the CTS-V the obvious choice? I can always get a CTS-V later, but this will very likely be the last chance to get a new SS. I have excluded Charger Hellcat because I can’t get one, won’t pay over MSRP for a Charger no matter how much HP it has, don’t really care for how they look, and prefer a better handling car versus straight-line speed that I can’t really use on the street.

What about the ATS-V? Too small?

I honestly don’t like how the CTS-V looks at all. Everything about the styling bugs me, it just looks like a bloated mess. Go for the SS.

I personally LOVE the SS but I understand why someone would choose the CTS-V. My biggest enjoyment of the SS is that you are one of the very few. These will be like the G8s and be hard to come by in a few years. I could easily see them being pretty well sought after.
All that said, my preference would be the old CTS-V wagon...soooo perfect. If they had a wagon now, that would be my choice, hands down.

SS. I test drove one when they first came out, and they’re a blast to drive! I can only imagine how great things are inside with a manual and the magnetic suspension.
Driving aside, the thing is DAMN comfortable. You get all the creature comforts the Caddy does, and my fiancee thought the back seat was extremely comfortable. She ranked it above a lot of others when we went to the Chicago Auto Show this year.

I would prefer the SS as it has the go fast bits but a more pedestrian look to attract less attention from cops. And plus it's Australian. You can put a Holden Commodore front end on it.

It is hard to ignore that I could buy a spare SS for parts and preservation and drive the other one, for the same price as a CTS-V.

I had a CTS-V (version 2) sedan, manual. Loved it. Great car and the wagon is super cool. But it was not without its flaws. Strangely enough the V2 is too small for my needs now. The new generation (2014+) CTS is a full size car, whereas the previous generation was more like a mid-size car with a small back seat (like the ATS today)

They both look better in person. The new CTS can look really good in the right color. It has really good lines, but they are hidden with the wrong color. Unfortunately there are only a couple colors that show it really well, IMO. The SS has some really interesting color choices too, and looks much better in some colors versus others.

Yes ATS-V is too small. I need a back seat that will hold 2 regular sized adults in normal comfort. Plus I really want a V8.

Understandable. I've always loved the SS, and the fact that it now comes with a manual makes the love stronger.

Black SS because stealth. Nobody's gonna give you a second glance if you're speeding, they'll probably just think you're a cop. I love the CTS-V, but the SS is such a great sleeper. Let us know what you do for sure!

MSRP for the CTS-V is like $83k. They’re not gonna last up there, but initially you’re looking at 2x the price over a new SS. The gap between these cars in terms of quality and performance isn’t going to be anywhere near that great.
Plus; slightly used SSs are already showing up for less than a fully loaded Camaro now. If you don’t care about new vs. used, I don’t even see how you’d pick the CTS-V. Fantastic car to be sure, but the value the SS provides in this scenario is simply too great.

M3 is too small, unfortunately. If they were priced similarly, I think I’d go CTS-V. But because that’s not a no brainer tells me something about the SS. And considering the SS is about half the price of a CTS-V, well, that’s just hard to ignore.

Yeah I'd go with the SS, spend some of the money modifying it if you want to close the power gap between the two.. The manual option is pretty appealing to IMO. Can't go wrong with the SS.

I’d go for the SS. Something felt off to me about the instrumentation and controls in the CTS-V, and the SS is actually very plush. I would also just feel way more comfortable driving an SS over a luxury car.
And dat red. Yuss!

I’d buy the SS - it’s less expensive while still being well-equipped and is rather unique IMO, especially with the manual transmission. The SS is also on its way out and is as good as it’s going to get. If those rumored updates are good, then that would leave the faux holes on the front seats as my only quibble with the car’s looks.
The CTS-V is twice the price and would be in its first model year - it could see improvements in reliability and feature content as the model years roll by. If you can afford to wait for a while, I don’t think you should rush to buy one now. You’ve got a fair bit of time to make this decision, anyhow.

Buy the CTS-V, keep for two years and use the trade in value to purchase a new or slightly used SS.

That’s pretty much what I’m thinking. For street use, I’m not sure the performance difference will be all that much. On a track, yes, but not in regular daily driving. And regular driving is where the manual adds the fun.
Pricing begin to gets fuzzy when you compare used or look at leasing, which I would consider on the CTS-V. Considering the 2016 SS is rumored to get some upgrades and be the last year, I’d probably order one to my exact specs and buy new.

An SS owner’s perspective: I have 2k miles on my ‘15, 6MT (for Jalops), non-sunroof (also for Jalops), Mystic Green (b/c green). I cross-shopped with countless other vehicles, new and used, including pristine E39 M5s and last-gen CTS-Vs. I decided I wanted something new and was not ready to leave the manual transmission camp, so that really narrowed the field. The new CTS-V and ATS-V, for that matter, did give me pause before deciding on the SS. However the CTS-V would have been too spendy for me and the ATS is smaller (maybe) than the E46 330i I was retiring (and I already determined I wanted something larger). Although finding the right SS for me was a pain (so rare), overall I’m very happy with the purchase. I immediately swapped much of the exterior and interior chromey trim pieces for black, which makes a huge difference IMHO, though I prefer a more sleepy look in general. The faux seat hole things are horrible, but a minor quibble. The polished wheels aren’t really my thing, but as forged 19” I can’t complain with the technical merit; might powdercoat in the future. The mag-ride is great (there’s a “hidden” Track Mode), the big brakes grab well, the exhaust is all burbles and pops and crackles, and the LS3 is all about them grunty feels. Obviously the aftermarket for LS-powered anything is huge, and the SS community is ripe with tales of forced induction and big-cube swaps to keep owners enthused.

I love the ATS but why are ALL the colors available for it such “old people” colors? Such a great value on the used market, just wish they mated the manual with the 3.6.

Eh, the grey is my favorite of it’s options, but the red, black, and white aren’t bad. The off white is very “old person”, but it is a staple Cadillac color. The available colors aren’t terrible, but the number of options is. I’d love one in Lexus’s Ultra Sonic Blue.

They’re both LS powered GM vehicles, but I think the CTS-V is too boxy with too many edges and the Holden has too many wierd curves.
