Why am I looking at gen 1 X5s? Oh right, because I apparently hate myself and having any sort of extra cash.
This one owner ‘05 3.0i tho...

I would get my SUV room and BMW driving dynamics though. I’d also probably be doing work to it all the time unless I’m gravely mistaken on how reliable these are.

I thought you wanted something more reliable?

My brain says I do but my everything else says “The M3 isn’t
that
bad, what make you think this’ll be any worse?”
Like I said, I apparently hate myself.

My neighbor has 2, both 6 speeds. He’s had no real issues with them. A fried of mile also has a manual one. He loves it.

It’s also a bit of a CP if I’m being honest. It’ll cost a lot for general maintenance and repairs.

Might want to consider pulling a DeMuro and going to Carmax for the warranty...

I hope you don’t like good gas mileage. My Dad had one of these in like 2001 and it got something like 9mpg

Well given my idea of “good” gas mileage is anything over 15, I’m not bothered by it at all.

I too am looking for one of these! A 2005 as well! (Preface: As plentiful as E53/E39/E46’s are, operating costs are higher than any E36. You’ve been warned.)
I have an E39 wagon. Suffice to say, I was not surprised to see that was plumped up in the GVWR for section 179. It has less space, but weighs a thousand pounds more than an E39 wagon (3600 lb). It’s slow... I’ve been looking for a 3.0i and I will probably rip things out and stick a 6 speed in. Post facelift ftw. As good as the M62 sounds, I don’t want to suffer.
Brain votes no b/c 3 BMW’s in driveway is a bad idea. Also, aftermarket doesn’t support this for any enthusiast purpose. These had issues that E39’s did not, but that was to be expected with the 1st gen. Electrical bugs in pre-facelift cars, suspension (bad treadwear), and more instances of cooling woes due to increased stress (read: fatty fatty 2x4 Bavarian).

I mean, you know. If you’re a masochist and you’re into that sort of thing, far be it from me to talk you down.

I’ve driven a manual one with 240,000 miles, and it seemed like a pretty solid car. It was just beat to shit on the exterior.
I asked the guy if he’d sell it to me, but he said that he wouldn’t sell it, as he was going to keep using it for his farm.

Wow, 240,000 miles and farmwork and it still felt solid.

He had brought it to a fundraiser car wash at my synagogue after he had just gone mudding. The only real issue was that the parking brake was shot, and he failed to tell me. I learned the hard way when I parked it in neutral, I got out, and it rolled away into a curb.

It was my second time driving a manual, and I had never been taught to park with it in first gear. The guy watched the whole thing happen and really didn't seem to care too much.

Something tells me that wasn't the worst thing that has happened to the car.

I'm sure. Considering that the guy was just mudding with it, It probably hasn't had the easiest life.

I have a hard time believing that an I6 in good working condition only got 9. Even the V8s we were looking at god 14 city.

It was the giant V8, and my Dad was never gentle with the gas pedal. Also coming off a 540 manual and a few Porsche’s before that does help to get good MPGs.

I’d also consider the ML, not as fun to drive but immensely more reliable.

They’re not really that bad but the 6 cylinder is a bit underpowered and the V8s aren’t the most reliable with some electrical issues but for the most part they’re good. My mom has had one for 7-8 years and it’s been pretty good to us

I'd rather have slightly underpowered than more unreliable. As long as the 0-60 is under 10 on the 6 it's all good.

I think it’s around the 8 second mark but it doesn’t feel like an suv, it’s really like driving a lifted e39

And that's exactly what I'm looking for. SUV height and room with car-ish driving dynamics.

Thats BMWs whole philosophy with the X series, they call it a SAV, sport activity vehicle. Ill try to find it but they have a commercial of an x5 and some american suv both braking hard for a yellow to red light and the body comes off the american suv to reveal a truck and the BMW just stops.
