Kia Soul edition.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve got about 30 miles behind the wheel of a Soul, and I’m already prepared to write a review. It is shit. Complete and utter shit. Not the shit, but shit. Poop. Feces. If I were a monkey, I’d fling this car at you.

The car in question has about 2,000 miles on it. There is already a serious issue with the window switches. The engine sounds like a swarm of angry bees, but there is absolutely no motive force. I’ve fallen over twice now, because there is no center console or seat mounted arm rest. The steering wheel controls feel like they are about to break off. Much like the manual side view mirror adjusters. The ride is shit. The speakers aren’t blown, but they sound like they are.

I don’t spend much time in this class of car, and have generally liked the Soul from an appearance and versatility standpoint; however, I never realized quite how bad it truly is.

Now if I can only get my forearm to quit bleeding where the flashing on the drivers door plastic cut me when I had my arm out the window...

You must have gotten a real beaten up one. Mine was fantastic... until it got squished by an Xterra.

What’s the worst car you’ve ever driven?

Red Kia Soul rental that you hated? I know that feel.

Also like yourself I don't spend much time in econocars, probably effects my opinion.

I assume this is the base model that seems like quite the penalty box considering the next trim level costs like 3k more. I’m pretty sure it’s a loss leader so Kia dealers can claim $1,500 off this brand new Kia Soul! Monthly payments as low as $99 a month (for 120months)

That’s strange, I’ve ridden in and driven my friends’ and it wasn’t nearly that bad. I think the rental version is a sub-base model.

The Soul is a taller Rio, the smallest car Kia offers in the US. It sounds like you drove the basest of base models, perhaps even a rental-car special. It probably had the anemic 1.6L I4, which feels overwhelmed and thrashy, like it’s from a piece of lawn equipment. The 1.8L and greater engines are much better, and nicer models (the + and !) are much more nicely equipped, including armrests. I really like the Soul’s height and ease of ingress/egress, and for an economy car, it’s not so bad. Not as fun as a Mazda2 or Ford Fiesta, but less boring than a Versa and less dreadful than a Spark or Sonic.

A bare-bones 2014 Tacoma has this exact same problem! The plastic is like razor blades on several other unfinished edges as well.

I got the 2010 version. It’s been awesome. No power to speak of, but it does 3 wheels easily and that’s fun. It also hauls a little trailer and such.

I’ve got the base 1.6 manual. Didn’t want to wait for dealer to get a sport manual. But 60k miles and 6 years later the only thing to go wrong is the rear view mirror is loose.

I drove a first-gen Kia Soul + once as a Zipcar rental. It was a perfectly adequate compact car. Not great, not terrible. I will say it was more pleasant to drive than a contemporary Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra, or Honda Insight.

And I was thinking of grabbing one the next time I did a So-Cal trip. I guess I’ll grab the keys to a RAV4 again, which is actually, ironically a pretty good car.
