Yes, that corner light is in fact held on with tape. No badges means I don’t know what model it is, but I’m sure some of you will be able ID it just by trim (looking at you, Nibby). Forgot to ask what it was in for but I’m sure it was something expensive.

All I know is that those hubcaps were available on the 190e also.

560SEL or something of that nature (420 SE, 500, etc). Aka an 80s S class. I think. These are actually supposed to be highly reliable if maintained properly and run for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Did it have a cloth interior? It’s probably a 280SE, they didn’t get the Bundts or MB-Tex standard unless it's a 300se or up I think
I just saw an almost identical one yesterday

It’s probably a gray import 280SE, judging by the hubcaps and bumpers. Mercedes also never sold a W140 S-Class with cloth seats in the U.S.

This looks like a european imported grey market Mercedes S class. Until the 560 SEL came out, the europian cars had much more horsepower that their American counterparts. I think Mercedes lobbied the government successfully to get importing of cars banned. My father had one of these cars when I was little, but it was a 500SE. It was much more powerful than the 380SE/SEL which was available here

From a time when a Mercedes Benz was built to a standard, not to a price point.
