Looking for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I found Nick, in Texas, who is one move ahead of me in the Loud Miata game. I see what looks like a Borla Sport dual exhaust, and Nick is claiming a straight pipe as well. Of those, I lack the straight pipe, but I’ve found a Racing Beat race connecting pipe for $100...

...but how much do I want to gamble on its legality when its time to do emissions inspections, and am I willing to live with a Check Engine light when the connecting pipe deletes my second O2 sensor?

i am straight piped to a vibrant performance straight through muffler. 03nb

sounds great. Check engine light isnt an issue just get an 02 spacer.

I wouldn’t do it.

Too loud. Even small four cylinders get louder than you think and I think you’re ears will most certainly appreciate an aggressive muffler over a straight pipe over the long run.

Not saying a straight piped Miata doesn’t sound good - but there’s a difference between it sounding good revving for a couple seconds and being in that car with that continual buzzing for minutes on end with no respite.

Again, this is all just me coming from my experience with a variety of exhaust setups on my old MR2 including straight piping.

Straight pipes are a great time if you can stand the noise/drone. My Baja Bug was straight piped and when cruising on the highway it was louder than a semi. Not even exaggerating.

I swear that car gave me tinnitus but it was a damn good time waking my neighbors up at 6 am leaving the house haha

If you live in a state with lax sound/emissions laws I say go for it. If the noise is too much for you, there is always the option to slap on a muffler or something else to kill the drone.

Have you checked ebay for used exhausts? They have some really good deals from time to time. Because I think having straight pipes would sound good for a while but will slowly wear on you.

I’ve got the Borla Sport Dual Exhaust (they make two different kinds, this is the louder), and I love it...but then it is easily modulated, and I can always choose whether I want it to be loud or quiet by how I work the throttle.

Looks like my buddy with both an NA and an NB bought the straight pipe. He's got a collection of other parts that he has yet to install, so I may or may not get to hear the difference it makes.
