Pray for me oppo, I’m going to embark on my hardest automotive repair later tonight.

The dreaded head gasket! I started disassembly late last night and was with the car til around 1 am. For those of you unaware it’s a 2005 Volvo V70R

So if any one would like to leave me some notes of encouragement please do so here.

Along those lines it would be nice to be number one in the automotive section of podomatic again. (Currently number 2) so maybe give it a listen and tell a friend?

This weeks guest was the great Steve Letho.

Some photos of my work so far, along with links to the podcast down below.

You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

Good luck. We're all counting on you.

I know, I feel it is my cosmic duty to keep a V70R on the road

Haha, appreciate it. Head gasket at Volvo is 3100 to put in a new(junk yard) engine is close to that, might as well try to fix it on my own

you got this. just label all the wires and hoses and bits and bobs you take off or disconnect.

In the case of wires and hoses, mark both what you removed and what you removed it from. On that note varying widths and variety of tape make for effective marking.

Thank for the advice, so far I have been about to remove a part and keep the bolts and hoses basicly with them, but that's gonna change tonight when I get to the really tough stuff

Good luck, buddy. And don’t worry about it too hard. If my scrub ass can do it, you can do it. :)

Thanks, I think I will feel so much better once I reach the half way point.

Also, get a piece of cardboard and poke holes in it to keep the valves / valve springs in the corresponding order. They may look awfully similar but you don’t want to find out the hard way that they are not.

even a thin/thin/thick type of pattern is better than nothing between mating hoses/wires.

It took me about a week between school and work to finish mine, but I didn’t have to remove all the accessories either. And it was a push rod driven rockers not this fancy overhead cam stuff. On the other hand, it was a malaise era carborated nightmare I was terrified of screwing up.

Yeah, I feel that taking it apart is the hardest part.

I have personally, by myself, done head gaskets on a Chevy 5.0L (305) and cylinder head replacement on a Ford CVH 2.0L. I’m hoping your experience is more Chevrolet and less Ford.

There is a lot of ford dna in my car... Hmmm well it will take as long as it takes

My guess is more like the Ford since he has cam(s) in the head and not the block.

Good luck boi! You got dis!

All the write up I’ve seen have the people keeping the cam in the bank during disassembly so I don't have to worry about that to much, but if shit goes sideways... Will do

Sorry to hear about all that DNA inside your car. A good detailing shop can help with that.

I know that feeling. I have the same thing about why I’m banned from every Hardee’s in Ohio.
