One of my favorite lessons at team O’Neil was to turn all the single cautions into “brake”. That looked like a really tricky corner because it was over crest and off camber

This one should have been “brake” for sure, but honestly there’s a ton of single cautions (or “care” as I call them, because “care/caution/danger” is shorter and makes much more sense than “caution/double caution/triple caution”) in the notes that don’t require braking or any major action. Most are more a case of “hey, there’s a thing here that you should be able to handle so long as you’re paying attention, but if you fuck up it’ll be extra bad.”

For example there was a “care R6/Cr keep mid.” The reason for the care was a stack of logs on the inside of the corner, slightly peeking out into the road, hidden by the crest. You could totally take the corner flat, but at the same time it most definitely merited a “care”

Nope. I called it as it was originally noted. I think it’s the rain that made the difference. If it’d stayed dry it would have been fine, but after the rain it was almost like Wales Rally GB out there.

Added note, I blame myself slightly because I feel like I could have been a bit earlier on the call. Fabio blames himself slightly because he got literally zero sleep overnight (rebuilding the engine), and despite running on nothing but coffe and Red Bull he was pushing hard, perhaps too hard. He also was driving visually, not auditorially, and didn’t slow until he saw the corner. It was also just a bad corner in bad conditions. Two other cars crashed there and every driver or co-driver I talked to afterwards knew exactly which corner I was talking about when I said “left three opens tightens three.” Most got wide-eyed and said “I almost went off there too!”

It got Block, it got John Fogg (the son of the owner of Rally America), and nearly got just about every competitor I talked to. It also got SP class front runner Nick Roberts last year.

You ever kind of build up this idea of what people on the internet would sound like only to find out you were completely wrong?

Glad you both made it out okay, though. Have you considered strappiing some forward-facing rockets to the car for use in panic stops? I may have been playing a bit too much KSP lately, but that’s what I’d do.

Did you have any Oppo stickers on the car? I hear those add +15 downforce.
