So yesterday I was cruising the lots here in the Canadian prairies and I stopped in at Mazda with the lovely lady I call my girlfriend and in the back corner I see it! ND Miata.

Despite popular opinion this is not the best car for North Dakota as the name may suggest but it is something quite striking. First thing on the lot is a NB Miata which is a great car but it really has nothing on this new machine. The colour is that striking red Mazda has in its awesome paint palette. The rims are still covered in transport plastic, as is the dash, seats and trunk lid.

First thought is that it is seems very small, I know Miata’s are small cars, that’s what makes them nimble and enjoyable. But it seems even smaller than the NB I drove by entering the lot. I think its just what we are used to, sure the NB is a small car by today’s standards but really the ND seems even smaller. A quick look through the specs reveals they are almost identical size wise with the only major difference being that the NB is two inches wider. I think the feeling of size comes from the fact that a car made in 2015 is the same physical size as its predecessor. Not many cars can stay the same, the base Mini is now 30 inches longer than the one built in 1998 even!

The plastic guarded interior made me feel like I was at grandma’s house with the couch still in the shipping plastic, except what was underneath that plastic was really nice black leather and not some floral pattern. The dash seemed simple and easy to work with since there really is not much of it. The one gripe I think I have is the big infotainment screen in the centre, that thing stuck up a lot higher than I thought it would and almost seems like a hazard for a shorter driver.

Overall is a truly a beautiful car, its obviously too early to tell how this car will do in the market but I do thing it will do well as a mid-life crisis mobile as the commercial suggests. Thanks for reading and hope to do it again!

Nice! There was an ND on display at Miata Day in Brookline, MA last weekend.

Kinja'd!!!

It was probably the first chance local Miata fans have had to see one in person. ( I’m special .) I didn’t care for the looks at first, but I have to admit, it’s growing on me, like Travis said it would. My sideways ride with him around Lime Rock’s autocross course didn’t hurt my opinion of the car, either...

How do you feel about the starting price? $31,900 CAD. I feel this should be priced more along the lines of the Scion FRS at $26-27K

$32K for a base model seems very steep to me.

That red is a good color on the ND. The other colors (at least according to Mazda UK) are silver, gray, blue-gray, black, and for some reason, two different shades of white.

The selection according to Mazda Japan is at least somewhat better...

Hopefully they bring that Dynamic Blue Mica over to the US. I’d be first in line. I had a 10th Anniversary Edition NB with a very similar color...

Its a pretty cool car! I liked the looks from the get go.

The one I walked around that that small plastic insert you can see in the picture on the front bumper missing though. Know what that is for?

Ya it is a lot, but for the accountant who’s kids finally moved out it is not terrible.

The next lot I went to was Toyota and they had a few FR-S’s in the same 27k-28k range though they did have a CPO one for 22k. I think the Miata will come down, they are just gouging the faithful right now.

I’m not a Miata fanboy by any stretch of the word but if I did not have a baby on the way I’d seriously consider one for around 28K.

This just seems so much better than the toybaru twins. I think it looks awesome it’s like they took a JDM Kei car and put it in the copier at 150%. It certainly looks japanese.

It might be a bit brighter in real life. I think this is Dynamic Blue Mica on the new 2:

Can I at least order it in a nice floral pattern instead of the black leather though?

Also, good to hear it’s about the same size as an NB. I was seriously considering getting one of those, as impractical as it would be in Wisconsin. My wife was not as enamored...

It kinda looks like a gloss version of WR Blue Pearl doesn’t it?
