And how long do they last?

Don’t use the paper strips that harden type, lasted like 2 weeks. My welds were dripping water aft my muffler (would idle for extended periods of time to tend my battery). I actually did a small blob of epoxy then wrapped it with a strip of exhaust wrap and a metal band. If it’s stupid and it works...

Depends on the size of the hole. Pinhole, the $3 tape should be fine. Cracked or broken, it’ll be gone the first time you drive more than a few miles (mine was somewhere between 20 minutes and 2 hours, don’t know exactly where and didn’t make any trips between the two distances).

Haven’t had any luck with tapes.
My advice:
Buy 6 pack
Drink 6 pack
Neatly cut tops and bottoms off cans
Fold over edges of flat sheets of aluminum
Layer the 6 sheets together
Put sheets over hole with 3 hose clamps (one on either side, and one right over the hole)
Will last life of exhaust system.

Funny you should ask this. I have a small hole in my muffler too and wanted to hold off until things got more rusted away and replace the whole exhaust from the cat back.
Watching the replies...
And a general question to all... have any of you had any experience using this product you can get from Canadian Tire:

Also depends on where the hole is at, before or after the cat. If it’s before, it’s going to burn off much quicker also.

I bought a car that has a lot of repairs on the exhaust since the originals are impossible to find. It’s some kind of thick rubbery epoxy with an orange heat wrap around it. Looks professionally done. It’s looks like the repair is 10 or 20 yrs old. Holding up well but I’m curious if anyone knows what it is. I can take pics. If anyone knows what it is or can identify it, that’s what I would use.

IMO you’d be better off dealing with the extra noise and putting that $15 in your new exhaust savings account.

It’s actually a good thing for the water condensation to be able to drip out. It’s either that or it just builds up until your whole exhaust is full.
Had a car a while back that kept burning through the right downstream oxygen sensor, like a new one every 2-3 months for years. Long story short, found the exhaust had a couple gallons of water stored up that would occasionally splash far enough up and forward to destroy the sensor. Fix was to drill 1/8” drain holes at the four lowest exhaust points. Many exhausts have drains built or engineered into them. Also helps prevent rust.

Hmmm good thinking. Since I plugged it the water gets shot out the back now. I dont let it idle like it use to either. Not sure how I’d feel about drilling holes though since there’s a noticeable sound different when the holes were present.

If the water is coming out the back you’re probably fine. Some cars have a ton of baffling that prevents the water from getting that far. How big was the hole?

Not very big, just enough for the water to drip. But even though it’s so small it did affect the sound.
