A story first. In the 60’s, my great-grandfather, who was a Policeman, drive a Volvo 164 police patrol. It was part of some kind of deal between the Volvo Cars and Indonesia.
Basically, the Police got some free Volvos (1000 Volvo 164 and 1000 Volvo 144), in exchange for some land so they could build a factory there. I never get a chance to meet him, or ride the Volvo 164, so I wonder is it any good? Was it reliable like any older Volvo?
I Wanted to buy one for my father once things gone normal. Plus I kinda like how it looks.

It is essentially a 144 with the B30 Straight six which in turn is based on the B20, so yeah it should be pretty reliable by 1960s European standards.

It looks a bit like Rolls Royce/Bentley from the 60’s and 70’s. I really like them.

So... Yeah.
I don’t really think 60’s motoring suits me because in my mind, almost everything made in the 60s are quite unreliable..

One could also say the first gen of XJ... or a Chevy Vega or early second-gen Camaro.

It does. It looks quite British. It’s like a 144 that get a face transplant by the British guys.

Really reliable, easy to work on and, if they are protected to European standard, quite rustproof.
I don’t know about the gearbox, but my guess is it’s the same as the 140’s/120’s/544’s and the like. That gearbox is a bit noisy but absolutely indestructible.
Engine wise, it’s a 6 cylinders variant of the B20 of the 140’s. It shoud be quite strong given the fact that Swedish military are runnig this engine in the Volvo C303. Yes, that truck those Blipshift guys have.

That’s sounds good. And the C303 looks badass, I’m surprised they only made 8000 of them.

That’s funny. They made some great cars in the 60’s. They were simple and bulletproof. Unless you’re talking about Italian cars, of course. Everyone else, including Volvo, made reliable cars for the most part. If you’re looking at one today, it’s going to be a 50 year old machine, so that’s a different story, but from a Mini to a Camaro, there was nothing wrong with how they built cars then.

And that’s a problem. Most car stories from my father said the cars in the 60s are mostly unreliable. Maybe because poor maintenance, maybe because poorly made cars using Indonesian standard, or maybe because they’re downright unreliable.

I guess I would admit it’s a different standard of reliability. Manufacturing was a lot different back then. And you were counted on to do maintenance yourself. What kind of cars were they selling in Indonesia back then? At that time, I think Asian manufacturers were still catching up to the west, but every 60’s era Japanese car I’ve had has been pretty solid. Except maybe my Datsun roadster. That car was finicky. They copied the Brits a little too closely.

Well, Malaysia has (had?) some in service, so maybe you’ll be able to find one close to you ?

Wait, you own a Datsun roadster? Was it a Fairlady Sport?
Well, we got almost everything from silly Russian cars until some high-end Exotic like Jaaag E-type and Toyota 2000GT.
One my father’s schoolmates used to be driven around in Japanese exotic like Toyota Century, 2000GT, and Mazda Cosmo Sport. The Century was very solid and reliable, while the rest were unreliable.
Still, they’re pretty.

Ooh I hate importing cars from Malaysia. For unknown reasons they won’t let Indonesians buy a used car to import here.
A shame, since I want a C6.

Yeah, the Fairlady Sport. I don’t have it any more. Really fun car, but those twin side draft carbs were tricky.
I guess I will amend my statement to anything other than sports/performance cars were reliable. Cosmos and 2000GT’s were certainly not ordinary. But, that’s relatively true today. Sports cars and high end stuff are always at the bottom of the reliability list.

That’s cool! My father-in law has one, Fairlady Sports 1600, but the whole chassis, suspension, engine and gearbox has been replaced by bits from Silvia S13 due to rust. He also going to do the same with his Silvia CSP311.
Yeah. Plus there’s also the rust issue..

Mine was a 2000. I’m from California, so fortunately, it wasn’t rusty.
Wow, he has an early Silvia CSP311? What a gorgeous car. That’ll be a neat project. A very good way to save it using those later bits.

Yeah, the 2000 sounds fun to drive.
Yeah, he found it in a shed with plants growing out of it and some rat poo inside. It was terrible.
It’s now sat on his garage, waiting for new windshield. I can’t wait until it’s finished!

Awesome. Good for him. I’d love to see its progress, if you feel like making an Oppo post. Sounds epic.
