Any oppos good with phones? I have a 1st gen Moto G and absolutely hate it, it’s slow and unreliable and crashes a lot (I’ve tried everything to fix this including factory reset).

Would a Lumia 635 be an upgrade? I can get one for a pretty good price and like the Windows firmware, but I don’t know whether it’ll actually be less prone to crashing etc than my Potatorola.

For reference I basically use the phone for browsing oppo and other internet stuff and then just calling and texting.

I have a first gen Moto G LTE and it’s been pretty dandy. Have you upgraded to Lollipop? Maybe that could help.

The 635 is ok. I haven’t used a Moto G before, but based on your impressions, anything is an upgrade. The Lumia launches its apps quickly, and doesn’t seem to crash. It’s a bit small for my liking, and the screen is not much to write home about, but it’d be a good phone.

I’m surprised you’re having problems with your Moto G, I’ve had mine since near launch and it’s still pretty stable and responsive. As per your question, Windows Phones tends to be more stable and responsive but at the cost of features. If you can get one for a good price go for it.

It may just be mine. It seems to crash waaay too regularly. I thought it was due to being of crap but after a factory reset its still slow and rubbish.

Ok, sorry, but this one looks like it will last you a great long while without getting killed by Carrier bloatware/malicious code designed to degrade mobile devices.

I would like to put more money into a phone and keep it, but it’s just not on the cards right now to be honest.

I have a 1520 and while it’s a huge monster, I absolutely love it.

It runs everything and since it’s so big, the battery lasts for an entire day during heavy usage and probably 3 days with light usage.

While the apps are not ‘there’ yet, there is a pretty good selection and more people are adopting it I think.

Oh i totally get it, I want to drop Verizon and start using my Google Fi invite but I put brought my wife from her horrible AT&T to Verizon (who I have never had problems with) so it would screw everything up. Unless I was able to get her a Google Fi invite, but that won’t work because she is an iPhoner.

Pros:

1. Windows Phone operating system, will have a lot of new goodies when Win10 is released.
2. Supports LTE (Not all Moto Gs support LTE)
3. Quaalcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU (Same GPU in most other phones, likely faster)
4. Up to 128 GB Removable Storage (Moto G LTE-Only variants support up to 32GB)
5. Smaller battery, but lasts longer (smaller display drains less power)
6. Weighs less

Cons:

1. Smaller resolution display. Moto G has a 1280x720 display,
2. Less Ram. This is going to prevent how much data you can view in the browser at once, slowing it down. 512mb vs 1GB in the Moto G
3. Possibly less internal storage space (Moto G has 8GB or 16GB depending on model, Lumia has only 8GB available)
4. More fragile display (Moto G has gorilla glass)

Things that are the same:
Same Arduino GPU
Same size display (4.5”, though resolution is worse on Lumia)

Honestly, you’d be better off moving to a 1st gen Moto X than a Lumia 635 or 2nd gen Moto G.

I’m not too worried about apps, I don’t use many. Sounds fine otherwise.

You might be able to get one after market and have your carrier activate it.

Comparing the prices of the phones unlocked (no contract):

A 2nd Gen Moto G is going to run you about $200, and get you all of the benefits of the Lumia 635 (including a few other things, like a front-facing camera), none of the drawbacks, with the exception of having the removable storage. This generation switched to the Quaalcomm snapdragon 400 that’s in the Moto X 1st gen.

A 1st gen Moto G seems to be still available for about $150, which is what you have now.

And a Lumia 635 goes for about $80, which would likely be a free downgrade for you from your carrier.

A 1st Gen Moto X is going to be between $100 and $150, so if your carrier still has them, it would probably be an even trade across from your current phone. They’re older, but very well designed.

You should check to see if your carrier would let you trade in your phone for an upgrade or trade to a similarly priced phone for free.

I’ve used the Moto X and Moto RAZR (both are based on the same hardware platform) and they seem much more reliable than the Moto G or E, probably because of the much better designed hardware-software integration and the fact that they use the Quaalcomm snapdragon 400 chip, which is rock-solid reliable and used in almost every other premium phone.

I’m going to sell the old phone on ebay I believe, still pulling good prices on there. I’ve kinda become attached to the idea of the Windows OS after using it quite a lot (spent an hour faffing about with a few different Lumias in the store today) so that’s what I’m focusing on. I’m swaying more towards the 535 than the 635 now, it has double the ram and a front facing camera.

I’ll have a look around for the Moto X for sure though, I remember using one before and coming away impressed.

Watch out for the battery life on the 535, which is about 2/3rds that of the 635 or the 2nd gen Moto G.

That being said, there’s some definite benefits to windows coming up with windows 10.

I have a problem with my (work) phone. I’m still using a Finnish made Nokia E7 which still works but it has problems. So I have been thinking about upgrading.

But I’m still pretty pissed for Nokia for making half of my home city unemployed by ending the Finnish phone production. That shouldn’t matter much as the phone business was sold to Microsoft. But two weeks ago Microsoft decided to close their R&D center in Salo ending all operations there and making the rest of the city unemployed too.

So I’m not going to have a new Microsoft phone. But what is my employer offering as possible new phones? Lumias of course. No thanks.

So the best solution that I can think up is that I’ll hoard all possible E7 phones for parts and keep my E7 working for years. The second best solution is that I’ll buy an Android phone with my own money and use it as my work phone.

If they’re getting rid of a load of E7s you may as well save them up if you like using it, I hate switching phones but this Motorola has pissed me off so much I’m being forced to.
