I never knew him, but I tried to pursue the same path he took and still pay very close attention to the lower formula. Obviously he was good as he went to Formula 1 on talent. Not an easy thing to do. Glad to see Oppo show their tribute in their own way.

I want to just share some photos in his memory. None of them taken by me as I didn’t take many pictures during my trip to the GP a two seasons ago (trust me, I had reasons). But, enjoy nonetheless.

He definitely showed the right potential. I mean, points in Monaco!? In a Marussia?!

Killed because of the bureaucracy. What a needless death.

Maybe. F1 has lagged behind in innovative SC procedures. They have an aversion to inserting the SC (which is a good thing believe it or not), but something needs to be done, because the SC doesn’t mean that vehicles are moving slowly because they have to catch the SC, etc.

However, inclusion of the VSC at Silverstone was fantastic. It neutralized the field safely and in a better manner than the Slow Zones at Le Mans (which I am in favor of as well, especially for such long tracks as the Nurburging, Spa and Le Mans).

It wasn’t the first similar accident there. There have been so many close calls there over the years. Martin Brundle spotted it as needing a safety car as soon as Sutil went off. There were so many political forces at that race. The promoters refused to move the GP time, no one wanted to cancel the event even though there was a typhoon bearing down on the circuit, they kept racing after the medevac helicopter could no longer fly... It was a clusterfuck all around. Jules should be racing this year.

I think they should update the VSC to be a pit-lane-esque limiter instead of a time limit, in order to simplify things. But otherwise, it is a very good system.

I know for Le Mans the Slow Zones and VSCs usually are using speed-limiters like in the pits. With the restriction of Pit-to-Car radio chatter, I foresee them going to a similar system.

I read that it’s a minimum time through the zone that must be met. And that they’ll give you a penalty for going too fast. At least, that’s what it was when they first started utilising it.

You are correct, according to Formula1.com it is a time limit in each sector.

Nice little tribute. Not the news I wanted to wake up to on Saturday, it cast a pall over the weekend, for sure. Race in peace, Jules.
