Can someone TL;DR me why everyone is throwing a hissy fit this time around?
Something to do with Gawker but how does that influence us? What is so unethical that people think it is even below Gawker to do?
Edit: I got it. thanks for the replies!

Go to any main page and see the “Conde Nast” post. Quite the dust-up over that.

In summary: The world doesn’t fit into a pre-determined mental schema. The end is nigh. Potato.

Gawker participated in a blackmail scheme to (probably) out a closeted private citizen for clicks.

Gawker crossed a line far beyond all the other lines they cross on a daily basis. People are mad, and doing what little bit they can to show it.

The main Gawker site ran a story that effectively helped someone blackmail the CEO of Conde Nast (as if the feud between Reddit and the Gawker network wasn’t bad enough). Naturally, everything remotely related to Gawker has been affected.

Background: Gawker has been all the way up reddit’s asshole lately over the resignation of Ellen Pao (interim Reddit CEO), the racist sub-Reddits, and all the related drama surrounding that. Conde Nast owns Reddit (a teeny tiny star in their galaxy of media properties that include GQ and Vogue). David Geithner (brother of ex-treasury secretary Tim Geithner) is the CFO of Conde Nast.
tl;dr-> David apparently solicited a gay prostitute/porn star for sex in secret because he is married. The Escort - realizing who Geithner is and might be connected to - asked David to pull some strings to get HUD to possibly undo an eviction. Geithner was spooked at this point and broke things off before they began. The escort then took the story to Gawker which they of course immediately ran because their grudge against Reddit/Conde Nast
Post-Mortem: Many are outraged over this for the following reasons
Outing someone who is probably gay
Protecting the (now outted) identity of a blackmailer
Acting with complicity to fullfill the blackmailer’s retaliation against Geithner
Destroying the lives of people who aren’t even connected at all to any of this (Geithner’s wife and two kids)
Doing all that for clicks/money and to get back at Conde Nast.
My personal take on all of it now that I’ve had time to process the facts is that it is completely fucked up. I can understand why people are wanting to leave Gawker over this. It’s disgusting even for them.
