Why all the Oppo outrage at Gawker?

They originated as, and still are, a gossip site

If the story passes the “truth test,” then they’ve really done nothing illegal.

They’re reporting on the illegal actions of two people - one of whom is a prominent member of society. The anonymous escort is party to illegal activity but also considered a confidential source. They would need a subpoena to reveal his identity.

David Geithner got caught with his pants down and will have to face consequences. Granted, they’re an order of magnitude greater than he would have faced if it were revealed to his wife in private, but it’s a risk of being a celebrity.

The anonymous escort is probably going to be charged with something once he is revealed.

Get over it. And get over yourselves. It’s not like they’re making up bullshit to smear people. If they were Fox-Newsing then I’d say “fuck it,” and log out forever.

This is more the straw that broke the camels back than anything. With Gawker being actively malicious, Kotaku constantly insulting its readerbase, Jezebel’s constant drivel etc. This combined with Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit is probably going to bring Gawker Media down and for that I’m glad this outrage exists.

I think the disgust is coming from knowing that gossip site is the foundation this site is housed on. They make money from us by linking articles here to generate traffic to their site. Oppo is one of the most ethical, and welcoming car sites I’ve come across so I can understand people not wanting to be related in anyway to a business with such tactics and unethical practices. But why stop there? Your local grocery store supports Star magazine which publishes a lot more garbage than this. Are you going to stop shopping there too?

Because he’s not really a public figure nor was there particularly anything novel or of public interest in the story. He wasn’t the face of the company, he wasn’t acting in an official capacity, he’s not someone that any significant portion of the population would know his face or name, there were no national articles written on or about him in the previous year other than some footnotes in the Time magazine layoffs. Going after non-public figures in non-public interest stories is something even the sleaziest of tabloids avoid.

You know... if he had solicited a female prostitute and refused to help house/feed her children, Gawker Media (and its army of commenters) would be up in arms, demanding his death.

(I’m not calling you a Troll, I’m calling Gawker trolls, and the *ONE SINGULAR REAL THING* that all this outrage has accomplished is to bring this to the attention of many who (like me) would have remained blissfully ignorant of all this useless crap had they not been:

a) told about it in oppo.

b) provided with a link to the story in an oppo post so we could read it ourselves and be “appropriately outraged” about how “mean-spirited” the whole thing was

b-2) which then provided Gawker with the very “clicks” and boost to their advertising that the “righteously angry” say they are “leaving” to avoid providing.

2. We don’t really know if this passes the truth test. Gawker says it does. I haven’t seen any updates so I don’t know where this all stands as of right now. But they likely have done something illegal

3. Gawker is participating in this illegal activity. The escort tried blackmailing him and when he didn’t help he went to Gawker. Gawker is the mode for punishment for not helping.

4. He is not a celebrity. He is a sibling of one but he is not. We don’t know anything about their personal lives. His wife may have known. This not only embarrasses him, but also his wife and 3 children and extended family. Gawker chose to harm these people as well who had nothing to do with the situation.
