Ever just get a feeling about a place? A little voice telling you you should take a closer look? That’s what happened today. I drove by a shop that had a 300TE sitting out front with 500E flares in front. Normally, that wouldn’t be enough to turn around, but something told me I should. It was worth it. Next to the 300TE was a 928, behind them a bright yellow C4 Corvette. In the garage behind, a 60s Jag sedan in black, covered in dust, but in good shape over all. There was also a LHD (odd for Japan) Fairlady roadster out front in in very nice condition.

When I went around the side, the real party started. A Saab 900 (?) sedan parked next to an E class wagon. Further back, it got even better. There was a 450SEL 6.9 parked next to another red 450SEL with the full AMG exterior treatment. Across from them was a 300SEL 6.3, but when I saw what was next to it, I literally started shaking. Right there, rotting away in this field, was a Mercedes 600. Yes, that Mercedes 600. In front of it was a V12 E Type coupe too. As I looked around to the front of the 600, I saw it was badly crashed and the engine was missing, but still. It was there, it was real. It was amazing.

Japan is a very strange place in which there are some of the oddest cars I have ever witnessed. i could have bought a 2002 tii in very rough shape for 1000 yen 3 years ago, but due to mDoD policies, even though I had no intent to drive it while still stationed in JP I was not allowed to buy it and ship it home. It was imported several years prior, but the military guy who owned it left it in the shop he had been working on it in and then never returned.

It was in extremely poor shape and it was Okinawa, where you can’t scrap an unregistered/uninspected car.

What kind of policy prohibits you to buy a car? I understand that some policy could prohibit for driving or registering it but that sound weird.

The policy where unmarried enlisted below the rank of E-6 (SSgt) cannot get approval for a license while stationed in Japan for 2 MOTHERFUCKING YEARS UNACCOMPANIED!!!!!!! All the while the officers and staff NCOs are the ones getting DUI’s, dealing drugs (for real, remember that “Spice” shit) and committing heinous acts of sexual assault. Oh don’t worry, fuck me right, the Sgts and below will pay for your fuckups.

Sorry, I began to miss the Corps yesterday after the incident just down the road from me in Chattanooga and I have to remind myself of why I am not there anymore.

Buffurealdo, if you are an unmarried sergeant or below in the USMC stationed in Japan for however long, you will not get approved for a license unless you “Excel above your peers by serving under the desk of your superiors.”

Sounds quite stupid. But how would marrying change things? Marrying someone shouldn’t much affect your driving skills abroad. Or am I thinking things too logically?

Your spouse gets their license free of charge and without DoD regulation, and since they have a car, that fast tracks you and gets you permission from your command to get a license and then get a car.
