I’m going to be replacing my wheel bearings, along with the rotors and pads on my 240D. I’ve been doing my normal forum scouring for information and have a pretty good idea on what to do, but one piece of advice left me with another question.

The internet seems in agreement that the job is made easier by putting the bearings/races into the freezer the night before. Makes sense. My question is, should you pack the bearings first? I feel if one were do it after the fact they’ll be far from cold by the time you’re done.

Any advice is appreciated.

I’ve never bothered to use a freezer, but I will say this - cold grease being harder to displace, it’s probably a cast iron bitch getting the preload right if you do that. If you coldify anything, make it just the race at most. I can’t think of any reason to make the bearing itself colder - making it harder to push on the spindle seems dumb.

It depends on the type of bearing you’re changing. Are you pressing a bearing in? In that case chilling the bearing may make it easier to pop in.

If it’s an “adjustable” taper bearing though there’s no real point.

240Ds use a double tapered roller. Races press or drive into the hub.

The best thing you can do is buy high quality bearings, SKF, Timken, and NSK would be my recommendation, or an exact OE part. Remember only to push on the inner ring, any pressure on the outer or cage will cause premature failure. Use a good high quality grease, and put a little on the seal as well.

Thanks. I went with FAG for the bearings. I did a fair amount of searching and they came highly recommended. Everything else including the grease I went with genuine MB.

Use a brass drift to pound the races in place (if you don’t have race installer tools), steel ones can damage them. Offer than that I can only agree with what Travis and RamblinRover said.

Like others have said, just the race should be chilled as that is what is going to be a needing to get pounded/pressed in. The bearing its self if it is like what is shown as a tapered roller you should leave that out and just pack that when you are about to do the preload adjustment. cooling the bearing does nothing to help you fit it in properly.
