I’m just sitting here, cooking dinner, wondering why my chicken smells metallic like as my laptop sits in the other room impatiently waiting my return.

Finally I figured out it wasn’t my food that smelt, it was my laptop. A piece of the fan got stuck in the fan, causing it to not cool down, and causing the power port to melt. It still works off of battery, but that will only last so long.

It had a good 3 year run.

Now I either have to deal with Windows 8 or fork out a crap ton of cash for a Mac.

Here's a pic of some things I saw once

Unless “soon” is tomorrow, it's not soon enough.

Windows 10 is pretty slick but Linux Mint is way slicker.

Honestly Windows 8 is not as bad as people like to say. I find it better in every way than 7.

I've used it a few times. I hated it. I still wish my XP machine hadn't fried.

Don’t go Muck. Remember, most laptops use the same components and are assembled by a lot of the same [Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian, or Brazilian] workers, with the brand-specific parts added at the end, and this includes crabApple. Try iBuypower or Systemex if you don’t care much about looks and want solid bang for the buck. Or, unless you have need of later hardware (only gamers and video/graphic/web designers), fix your old laptop. If you were local I’d fix it for you in trade for a ride in one of your cars, haha, and I’d have a loaner laptop for you while I was fixing yours (clients wind up giving me their older laptops when they upgrade, which means I haven't bought a laptop in over 10 years).

I’m writing this from a $100 WinBook (Micro Center house brand or close to it) Windows 8.1 tablet, evidence that I’m very miserly when it comes to electronics purchases.

Download the free Technical Preview. The most recent builds are stable and can get you used to the new OS before its official launch 7/29.

When it comes to laptops the best option is to get a slightly used business laptop like a Thinkpad, Probook or Latitude. They have great build quality, good keyboards (post-T430 Thinkpads notwithstanding), usually in great condition, cheap, and most run Windows 7.

Still a better laptop death story than “I dropped it into the toilet.” or “Viruses from watching porn.”

When you tell it to your coworkers, you should say that a large fire monster came out of your laptop summoned by Satan to kill you. But you took out your lightsaber and killed it valiantly.

Also, SSD. Ya need dat in a new laptop.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

The tiles are your icons. Everything else works basically the same way. With the 8.1 update you never really have to use the tiled UI.

Get a Surface 3, its a very good PC. Unless you process video and graphics, you wont need the Surface Pro.

Everything has a touch screen. Get with the times, gramps.

If it helps at all, I’m still using the MacBook I bought in 2008 as my main computer. No complaints yet, so I guess that extra cash does go somewhere...

As long as you don’t need to take work home that would require windows, Mac is where it’s at. 5 Years on my Pro and it’s still as great as the day I bought it. Never freezes, crashes, gives me ‘virus111!!!!’ warnings. I’ll never own another brand again if I don’t have to.
