So I’ve always liked the S2000s, but I fear I’d have the same issue I have in the recent-gen MX-5; namely, I cant see through the windshield. My eyes are level with the windshield frame. If anyone has sat in both, how do they compare on headroom?

Well, how tall are you?
I’ve sat in NAs, NBs, and S2Ks. The S2K has the most headroom. My NB Miata’s soft top lets me know when it’s time to get my hair cut. That being said, operating the car isn’t at all an issue. I’m about 5’11” but if my legs were longer I would have trouble with the Miata’s pedalbox and steering wheel.

You must be one lanky-ass bastard to be looking directly at the top of the windscreen. :p

I think the S2000 actually has more headroom. I’m 6’4 and owned an ap1 for about a year with no issues other than getting too close to a stoplight and not being able to see it. In the mx-5, the top of the windshield is basically right in your way most of the time. (I just tought someone to drive stick in one that they just bought.) Hope that helps.

Sounds like you’re about the same place I was in the Miata. Good to know.

I’m average height but with insanely short legs, which means I have a really long torso. It’s nice for movie theaters, though.

5’10”, but with a really long torso, so headroom is an issue in a lot of cars. I usually can’t fit in cars with sunroofs.

Yea, I “fit” in the s2k and I’m 6’4 230lbs. You’ll be fine. It’s much bigger than you think it would be. Like an elise.

Sort of like a reverse T-rex?

Amongst the S2K (which I drove one on Thursday), NC Miatas (drove one last Tuesday), and the Solstice/Sky (which I sat in then immediately abandoned because I had better things to do), the Solstice/Sky are easily the most cramped, and the S2K definitely feels tight, like borderline claustrophobia-inducing, and the hood feels almost too long. The MX-5 feels like a glove and I feel I could drive it mostly blindfolded. For reference, I’m just under 5’10” and have long legs, so the seats have to be as far back and as low down as they can to properly fit (which the sky/solstice never do, even with the top down).
IIRC the roomiest small Japanese roadster I’ve lately encountered was the Miata PRHT.

I had the same issue with the NC Miata, but was not a problem in the S2000. I’m 6’1” with a 34” inseam.

Imagine if you instead had very short legs, and so your head was about 4-6” closer to the sky. That’s my dilemma.

With the top down, the headroom approaches infinity. Get a helmet and be done with it :)

Unless you can’t see over the windshield support. Headroom may approach infinity, but visibility is essentially zero.

I think the s2k has more head room from what I remember. I mostly look above the windscreen in my NB. The NC and ND I have yet to experience. VTech may be the answer you seek. or doing a seat swap/foamectomy in the miata. . .

I’ve always had the same problem, too. I’m only 5’10”, but I guess the way I’m proportioned makes me sit higher up. One thing that I know is super common for MX-5’s is a ‘foam-ectomy’, where you take out 80% of the foam from the bottom of the driver’s seat in order to sit lower. However, the newest MX-5 seems to have done this for you and sits lower, so I imagine the ND would have better visibility out the front.

Thanks for posting this up. I was wondering this too. I’m 6’1” *all torso* and I put a racing seat in my NA Miata because I was just too tall for it. An AP1 is on the short list for my next car, I was always wondering how I’d fit in one without modifying anything.
