"Roadster Man" (roadsterman)

I’ve got $600 burning a hole in my pocket from selling a set of wheels, and I’ve decided to resist the urge to buy a Playstation 4 since I’m afraid I’ll get addicted to Destiny and never leave my living room again.
So a few options are bouncing around my head. Saving is out of the question since I’m not very smart. I’m thinking about saving up a few hundred bucks more and buying a motorcycle. I’ve got my eye on a newer Honda Nighthawk 250, or an older Nighthawk with a little more displacement. A Ninja 250 or an older Honda VTR Interceptor are options too, but I don’t really want a sport bike. I just want to cruise.
As I peruse craigslist, I notice that 9 out of 10 ads say “no title, can provide bill of sale.” What’s up with this? Are all of these stolen or just owned by people who tend to misplace very important things? Does anyone have experience attempting to register a bike with just an old registration and a bill of sale, or worse case scenario just a bill of sale? It seems like I can get a good deal on some of these bikes with this no-title issue, but I have a feeling it’s for a reason. I know the rules differ state-to-state (maybe even DMV-to-DMV?), but I was wondering if any riders here on Oppo have any experience registering a bike with only a bill of sale.
A pic of my current dream bike for everyone. Yeah I really want that Interceptor.. so rad it’s almost painful!

600? dude, thats not really enough to get into motorcycles. I spend 600 on a helmet. you looking at at least 700 in gear, and that6s before the bike and insurance.
by all means get into it. But its not THAT cheap

Do you have any debts? Pay ‘em down.
And I agree with others in this thread - you want a decent bike, a decent helmet, a decent romper suit, decent pads so you don’t get hurt when you dump it the first time (I did!). More like 6 thousand, not $600.

Don’t forget your hi-viz vest for when you’re doing 10 under the limit on your 250.

$600 is totally enough to get into motorcycles. $600 in helmet and $700 in “gear” is ridiculous.

I would check with people with experience registering motorcycles with no title : www.reddit.com/r/calamariraceteam .
www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles is full of old men who practice All The Gear All The Time even when they shuffle to the bathroom in case they fall off the toilet and believe that doing the speed limit is reckless amounts of speed.

Depends on your state of course but no title isn’t really a deal breaker. First check AAA, in some states they will research it and register it for you. There are also title services that can handle it for you but it’s gonna cost around $50 to $100. If you can check all of the paperwork and make sure no one has a claim on it, most states let you register with a bonded title. The bond is usually one and a half times the value of the vehicle, I think it’s based off the original sale price and average depreciation. After three years or so if nobody makes a claim a title is issued. There are companies that will offer this service for around $100-$150 or so. That’s pretty much the worst case though, most states will accept the previous owners registration+ Bill of sale and issue a title. I would still use AAA or a next day title service, no matter how right you are there is always a chance the dmv is staffed by assholes and idiots and it will be a huge pain in the ass. Also fuck standing in line.

Exactly what I was coming here to say!
All my bikes came with titles, but you can register a bike with a bill of sale AND the registration from the previous owner. Without registration they have no way of knowing if that person was the legal owner and had the right to sell it to you. Without registration you may have to go to the local Police Department and have a VIN search done, and have a form filled out stating it wasn’t stolen.

Yeah, I’ve got cash allotted for the rest of the deal, including a MSF course. I’m talking just the money for the bike. I want to work on it myself and all that since it’ll just be for fun on the weekends and stuff.

Cheap bikes with no title are usually stolen, or poorly looked after toys, that someone is trying to unload. In either case, they are an iffy proposition. It can be worth it, if it’s an old classic, and the original owner is no longer with us or something like that. But more often than not, it’s just a pain in the ass that’s better to avoid. Remember, if they tell you that it’s easy to get a title, then they could have done it too.
My advice for all cycles, is never let the crap you have to do to get to the riding, become more time consuming than the the actual riding itself. Otherwise you end up never riding.

is it tohru?
200$ jacket jets you a pretty flimsy pos
200$ helemt. yea, it works. kinda.
150$ for a 1/2 decent set of boots
100$ for a good set of riding jeans
50$ for a good set of gloves
BAM 700. And thats buying cheap crap.
if you want to risk your ass in a skid lid and a wife beater, go for it. Just dont expect any remorse from me if you go down and end up needing a skin graft 1/2 the size of texas
