The silver lining of having your new-to-you !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ? The technicians get very intimate and find other parts that need replacing which otherwise would have been overlooked. In this case it was a boisterous blower motor and elevated levels of noise coming from the front of the N20 engine. The latter was of greater concern.

It was a few weeks ago when the shop foreman informed me that the he wanted to replace the timing chain but were going to hold off until the other issues were resolved. Apparently there were 2012 and 2013 N20 and N26 powered vehicles coming back in with noises coming from the front of the engines that were a result of stretched timing chains.

As luck would have it, today I received two updates. The first was that the Auto Start Stop failure was resolved. That’s the main reason the car has been in the shop for so long. The second update pertains to the timing chain. BMW just redesigned the timing chain related components and my car will be one of the first to receive the update. The bad news is that the parts are on back order and likely won’t arrive until next week.

It’s all good news. BMW recognized that the timing chains in the N20 and N26 engines are an issue and their technicians are proactively replacing them before any damage is done. It doesn’t matter what badge is in your driveway, knowing the manufacturer steps up and resolves problems before they get out of hand is great. This isn’t my first BMW but it is one of the few I’ve owned under warranty and I doubt the level of service I’ve received these past two months would be comparable anywhere else.

So the big news again is that BMW has redesigned the timing chain components. How exactly? Don’t know. What I do know is that the new components are in use in all N20 and N26 engines being manufactured today and the updated parts are being distributed to BMW dealers as we speak. My 2012 328i will be one of the first to get the retrofit but these parts are so new they are on back order. Estimated delivery for these parts is some time next week.

How so many manufacturers seem to get timing chains wrong in this day and age is beyond me. Given the issues BMW has had with the R56 Mini engines, this is all the more surprising. At least they’re fixing it for you.

Such a dinky little chain. Then again, I’m used to Benz diesels...

Looks like the same girth as what I have on my M54. You can feel the cost cutting measures in modern BMW’s. Not as pronounced as those in VW in prior years, but sitting in the incorrectly optioned car can feel like sitting in a Corolla.

Doug DeMuro’s dad’s Lexus dealer begs to differ with you .

Single row timing chain? I thought it was established that these weren’t really good enough on high-performance engines back in the 60s.

I’m impressed that they’re proactively fixing an issue on their engines, but according to the reputation for German engineering excellence it shouldn’t really have been an issue to begin with...

Not that I’ve actually got anything against BMW on this, loads of engines from loads of manufacturers have teething problems. It just bugs me a little that BMW seem to be able to get away with things like this, whereas if it happened in an Alfa or a Maserati they’d be lambasted for it by the press...

how the fuck do you have backordered parts when you are the first to get them?

Just two weeks ago it sounded like the timing chain was going to be replaced with original parts but as of the two days ago I was informed there was a new design and I would get that instead. The dealership said that BMW had just started using these new parts implying that it may have been as recently as the previous conversation.

My guess is that BMW announced internally that there were updated parts to fix the stretched timing chains that plagued the N20/26’s and nearly every facility ordered these parts at the same time.

I just picked up a 2012 328i, non-CPO... without researching this issue first. I suppose this is a TSB only with no extended coverage?
