I’m sure you’ve had this problem. I know I have. You’ve got eight sailplanes, and you need an easy way to store them and an easy way to take out the one we want to fly today. Bob Carleton, a pilot in New Mexico, has found a unique way to solve this nettlesome problem with his carousel hangar.

Ok, at :14, is that a turbine emergency engine on that sailplane?! I once met a guy who used his prop emergency engine as a way to takeoff from his property in a rural Detroit suburb. Seemed to be a little rough on the prop though as it would have to hit the stop so he could stow it after he was at altitude.

I don’t know about an emergency engine, but there is a guy that I’ve seen on the air show circuit who has a jet-powered glider that he does aerobatics with. He uses the engine to take off and regain altitude. It’s really a fantastic show, slow but really graceful and beautiful to watch.
