So I’m looking to make a change of vehicle (as always) but mostly because my B6 Passat 3.6L has the fatal flaw of the bolt that will destroy the engine eventually.

So here’s my preface: I don’t drive much. Me and my girlfriend have one car and we own a business whose headquarters is 6 blocks from our home. So I don’t need a commuter car (right now). Although - my goal is to own a wagon one day (the older the better).

Okay - now to the real question to the Oppo world. Would you buy this? What are the big issues? Why am i so drawn to its beautiful looks? And keep in mind that we drive maybe 100 miles a month.

Please tell me that it’s worth it or tell me I’m nuts - I want all feedback because (like most of us) I’m blinded by my own desires.

Buy it, but having it as the only might not be the best idea, what if you need a surprise trip to the hospital? or some other emergency and the Rolls doesn’t start? Buy a less unreliable cool wagon or a Range Rover.

i know nothing of bentleys or bentley engines, but i imagine this would not like being driven 12 blocks a day. i have had a v12 xjs for the past 2.5 years, that has mostly done highway duty between nyc and philadelphia. ive put ~22k miles on it in the past 2 years (estimate as the odo quit in october). it loves the highway, but the tooling around nyc in the summer has pretty much done it in. im going to have to lay it up for a few months for an overhaul of the top end and the cooling system, and electrical fans.

similar to you, it was the beauty of the thing that convinced me. my recommendation if you buy it, get it up to snuff, then use it for long distance hauls. keep an eye on all of the gauges, and check everything before and after you drive it. stay on top of the maintenance, or you’ll end up with an immobile, 3 ton lawn ornament.

but yeah, i say, if you love it, get it. we’re only here once.

I’m gonna be that person that says, you don’t get it because it’s a good idea, you get it because you love it.

I love that everyone has basically told me nothing of matter and made my decision that much harder. I’d expect nothing less from opponauts!

Here are the big issues.

Cons:

Expensive, uncommon parts except for the th400 transmission

The later ones (77+) have rack and pinion steering and improved front suspension

Pros:

Since its post-69, it doesn’t have the crazy Citroen derrived self leveling suspension

The Bentley/Rolls 6.25L/6.75L enjoyed a long production run and is one of the more durable engines to come out of Britain despite being an alloy block

so does that mean mean given the minimal drive that its a plus or a negative? i fully understand standard maintenance and whatever comes with it - but i still way the pros with the cons. i appreciate the feedback. i’m not the biggest gear head on oppo despite not wanting to admit it - I’m just looking for help. so thank you

As long as you get it to operating temperature, the Rolls should enjoy a nice, low speed drive. It’s what it was designed to do.

You will have to be dedicated and willing to learn when a problem arises if you don’t have much experience already—unless you like shelling out cash, of course. It will not be problem free, but it should be an enjoyable car to own and maintain.

For 5 years, I’ve used a 72 Cutlass for short daily drives and it is normally reliable. It sits for a couple weeks at a time occasionally but gets frequent weekend use. However, I have the advantage of being able to order almost any part I desire over the counter at any generic parts store. You will not have the same luxury with the Rolls and you will have to rely on specialists and online stores.

AFAIK, the Rolls doesn’t have any fatal flaws, but I would find out why he’s selling it after investing so much work in it.

If you got time to tinker, then any classic luxury car will suit you well given the short amount you drive.
