Why do people hate the Z/G/Skyline? They’re awesome!

I like ‘em, and they make me wax nostalgic about the Nissan of my childhood. How I miss the Maxima SE, 240sx, the SE-R spec V.... Great cars like those are still around, but Nissan doesn’t make them.

A Z is actually cooler than most of the cars out there; it’s a roaster, can be modified easily, and is available with a manual. Just because the Jalopnik commentators don’t like how it looks or how it performs doesn’t mean they should bash their fellow commenter for it. It’d be like people hating my Ranger because it doesn’t have a manual. I personally think the Z is a neat car, and looks pretty good, even today.

I’ve never really cared for the mindset associated with Jalopnik and the commenters. That commenting thread confirms my lack of taste.

I don’t hate the Z at all. I do hate Nissan’s terrible market strategy with it though. There’s no doubt that letting it languish with a few refreshes here and there while it’s rivals were getting full makeovers and serious power upgrades really hurt it’s position in the US market. Then Korea decided it could make a better Z than nissan could and canabalized some of it’s marketshare while hurting the G37 for good measure.

Then Nissan shitcanned the BRZ competitor they told everyone they were going to make (for good reason TBH relative to the slow selling BRZ, but that doesn’t make it suck less), and they continue to sit on their bloody hands while already good competitors get gooder, faster, better stronger. Come on, Nissan! The RX is dead, The supra’s probably gonna be an LFA replacement, Honda is allergic to RWD, and Mitsu is on life support! You can’t let the midrange Japanese sports coupe die off again like you did with the 300ZX! Get your crap together!

Every time I see a Nissan logo or Datsun logo I get flashbacks of their history in the automotive world.

Its kind of in a weird segement. Faster and more expensive than a Miata or BRZ. About the same price and slower than a Camaro or Mustang.

Top two comments say it all in this thread: http://jalopnik.com/your-ridiculou…

Shameful and mostly not true.

:(

although I do like the G’s much more than the Z’s, and too bad the Z doesn’t have t-tops and that they took away the rear wiper with the 370z

Nice to have a relatively affordable Japanese midsize RWD luxury car in a crowded field of unreliable Germans.

Because the most important part of being a REAL ENTHUSIAST is having very strong feelings about cars other people own.

It’s the first page in the book, before even learning the terms AUTOTRAGIC and FAIL WHEEL DRIVE.

I’m pretty sure the heffalump handling is a Clarkson quote, so good to see their opinions are actually just parroting someone else’s.

I hear you on the IDX concept. What a horrific move to make.

I think the general consensus seems to be that the Z car lineage as a whole is great ... except for the 350 on.

The current car has run long in the tooth and needs a new engine, less weight and price adjusted to be more “accessible”. I’m hoping the rumors are true with the next Z and that it will move down market a little bit.

Make it fuel efficient on the side and it could be a winner.

If you go back a bit further when the “Z” was reintroduced around 03, the affordable retro-muscle car resurgence had yet to take shape (5th Gen Camaro and Mustang). The 350z was a main competitor to cars like the RX-8, S2000, Boxster, WRX/STi, GTO and etc.

Somewhat affordable... but most notably they were proper enthusiast cars. Some are still with us, but others have disappeared. I do like how the Camaro and Mustang have evolved to become cars that can actually handle as opposed to just being straight liner’s.

I see that so often. My favorite is when they're criticizing a super car they've never driven about its driving/handling characteristics and it's a word for word quote from Clarkson.

The original 350 and 1st gen G coupe are really great looking, awesome sounding cars. They got more refined but arguably less desirable from that point. The person that did the design work on the first gen G exhaust package deserves a Grammy. (And they need a couple inches more head room - I don’t fit in the d@amn things...)

I feel like the weekend crowd on the FP is different. That and people just love to hate on Nicole.

Also, my buddy has a 350Z Nismo just like that one. Awesome car.

The IDX was the first Nissan I actually wanted to own in many years. I was sad when I heard it was cancelled.

The only thing worse than people hatin on a car is people giving a shit that others don't like their car. Get off the pinche internets and go drive or work on your car!

Camaro and Mustang have turned into some well rounded performance cars that punch above their weight.

IMO, the Z car really hasnt changed a whole lot since it came out.

How can you hate on this? Sure, it’s Japanese and a bit different looking. But isn’t that what Jalopnik (and DEFINITELY Oppo) is about? Different, but fun in our own way.

Sadly I only got to drive this thing slowly and a short distance (and I mean short!), but it everything you need: great seats, good seating position, heavy clutch and good road feel.

Nissan put lots of development and refinement into the cars. (The price tag also shows lol)

Think about this too...

The Front Midship (FM) platform evolved into the Premium Front Midship platform. The Premium FM platform is what underpins the R35 GT-R. I believe that says something.

It does. However, the GT-R Nismo seems a little too much for street use. It’s perfect for the “racecar for the street” feel, but seems as though it would be difficult to live with. All of this would be fine if the car could handle track time. But, from what I understand from my colleagues, if you push the GT-R on track for too long, it just won’t make it a full day without a cooling off period.

However, as a street car, the more pedestrian versions of the GT-R and the 370Z seem perfect for a liveable performance coupe.
