Did you know that Nissan has a rebadge of the Mazda5? Sold only in Japan, of course. And it doesn’t have that dumb smiley-face front? Or the weird swoop in the doors. The front end is the only thing I don’t like about the 5. Maybe someday someone can import front fascia parts for this and swap them onto a 5.

And people always say badge engineering went rampant here in the US.

It’s nothing compared to Japan, where a vast majority of cars are badge engineered versions of other cars.

For example, half of the Japanese manufacturers build all of the kei cars for all Japanese manufacturers: Daihatsu, Honda, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki.

Toyota and Subaru sell rebadged Daihatsus (which makes sense, since Toyota owns Daihatsu and part of Subaru), Nissan sells rebadged Mitsubishi and Suzuki models, and Mazda sells rebadged Suzuki models.

Honda is the only one who’s cars aren’t sold rebadged as other brands, or vice versa. If Honda builds a specific model, you can only get it as such.

In the past, other brands have sold rebadged kei cars there as well, Chevrolet used to sell a rebadged Suzuki Wagon R, called the MW, for example.

Then, there was the Mazdas that were rebadged as Fords, like the Demio, which was sold as the Ford Festiva Mini Wagon, and the Bongo, which was sold as the Ford Freda.

And there’s more. The Y11 Nissan AD van was rebadged as the Mazda Familia Van, and the Y12 AD is also sold as both the Familia Van and the Mitsubishi Lancer Cargo.

Commercial trucks aren’t immune to it, either. The Nissan Atlas is available in two versions, the NT450, a rebadged Isuzu Elf, and the F24, which is also sold as the UD Condor Light Duty.

Nissan’s NV200 is also sold as the Mitsubishi Delica D:3 and Delica Van.

I could probably go on all day about it.

I really like the first gen 5. When I bought my MS3 seven years ago I had no use for a mini minivan. Now I’m thinking about getting rid of my car for something bigger, but the second gen 5 is ugly as shit. I was hoping they’d make a third gen with the new style and 2.5, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening.

It seems as though they’ve given up on it, at least for the U.S. market. It’s a shame, really. The 5 and the 2 both would be amazing with the new design language and the SkyActiv powertrains. They updated the 2 but it isn't going to be sold here. :(

Hmm...the one I looked at had the same Mazda interior. Maybe this is the prior generation?
