Do you guys know of any places that rent impact guns? I’ve got an axle nut which is being quite the pain in the ass, and I don’t know whether I should take it somewhere to get it off, find somewhere that rents a gun, or just buy my own. Is it worth buying my own?

I’ve got a compressor already, but it’s pretty small.

It might not be up to powering a impact. harbo freight sells electric ones but no guarantee it will be powerful enough. Why not try a huge breaker bar?

I bought a HF electric impact about 15 years ago. Has not let me down yet.

Buy a good one, it’s an investment

Do you think an electric one would be able to get a 23-year old, slightly rusted axle nut off?

Breaker bar with a six foot length of pipe on it?

Make sure either way you go about it to use actual impact sockets, you will break a “standard” socket becuase they just aren’t rated for impact loads, most of my car/fabrication friends have made the mistake and we all have broken sockets to show for it.

Yep, got a breaker bar and a 32mm axle nut socket. I’m too broke to buy new sockets so I’m extra careful haha

Try a breaker bar with a Pipe on the end of it. More distance = more force

Don’t know. But I can tell you it took off a few nuts that I did not expect it to budge.

Breaker bar and another 3-6’ of pipe slid over for leverage.

Google “equipment rental” & your zip code.

I don't have my air compressor set up and such, but I use my cordless impact occasionally. It saved me in a few jams, nice to use along with tire changes. May not be worth the $325 investment for just one nut.

Near me there are Taylor Rental and Just Ask Rental/TrueValue stores. I bought this one for after using one for that exact purpose .

That one is electric?

Yes. They make cordless ones as well, but they aren’t as powerful.

Yeah I figured cordless wouldn’t work. That one works well for you though?

Kinja'd!!!1

Yes. Phenomenally so. There are instances where it won’t fit, but neither would a pneumatic impact.

I’ll look into that then. Thanks for the info!

Listen. Been there, done this. I ended up using torches, cheater pipes and finally, finally got the thing to bust with a black steel 1-1/4” 8 foot pipe for a cheater bar. Bullocks. Took me hours and hours.

My friend was having the same problem on his car a couple months later. A wandering mechanic had chatted him up, said he’d drop over. They tried the breaker bar, no go (of course) so old fuck just gets a 3 lbs maul, a sharp cold chisel and 3 mins later, the nut is off, he was careful of the threads, and all is well (since we have to replace the nut anyway.)

All I could think of was “why didn’t I think of that?”

Put a screwdriver in the rotor to keep it from turning and use a floor jack to raise up the end of the breaker bar

I have this one from harbor freight. It is my go-to when the craftsman one run off a 30gal compressor can budge something. Hasn’t let me down yet.

I think it would do the job as good as a pneumatic one. One thing I have had sucess with is if the nut doesn’t want to come loose at first. Reverse the direction and use in tighten. Then reverse it to remove direction. Do that a few times and it most always frees the nut.
