I wouldn’t be suprised if Ford started calling the Focus hatch a crossover it’s sales would increase.

In mercedes defense, who are you to say an SUV/cuv has to be big? What would you classify a jeep as or a suzuki amigo? Similarly how is the nissan gtr a sports car/super car when it's the size of a ford fusion?

The A3 looks way better, even if it has an old engine and tranny

The GLA is a superfluous fat hatch crossover thing based on the A. The A is 1433 mm tall. Compared to the normal A, where does that leave the GLA? It is taller/blobbier than the normal A compact, and also compared to other compacts.
The Focus in your comparison is relatively tall for a compact. I have one myself as a company car, and I notice it when I park it next to other vehicles.

They already have a crossover Focus, it’s the Escape/Kuga. Slower, heavier, thirstier, shorter, not as good to drive, more expensive and less cargo space than a current gen Focus wagon with the identical drive train, but it is taller so it sells.
