I’m in need of keeping a metal tube 2” diameter upright, say, in a field and not likely to fall over from a concussive blast. Original tube and base was lost some time ago.

Kinja'd!!!

Quad or maybe tri-sided? Simple is probably better.

Depending on the blast power a tri set up should be fine but if you have the ability a quad would be better. Or you could go fancy with a dome set up

Just get a tube 24” longer then necessary and pound that 24” into the ground.

3 points is all you need to support something on a plane, so assuming the pole itself isn’t touching the ground how about a makeshift tripod?

Simple, bury part of the tube in the ground.

Agreed. Half dome, hole in the top, insert tube

Build a tripod base for it. Look at a collapsable video screen for an example:

Just mount it like a fence post. Fill coffee can with concrete, plop tube in, dig post hole, bury the end. Won’t go anywhere.

That... May actually work well.

You would have to build it out of thicker materials depending on what you are doing, but the idea applies. You could get a couple of 2” collars to put around the pipe, bolt a few legs onto it and voila.

How stable does it have to be? You launching fireworks out of it?

Maybe you can put holes in the end of the legs and stake them down?

Pound the shit out of it, you can’t believe how much blasting power mortars have, also make sure your metal tube is steel and like SCH 40 or something really thick.

You can still move it if you don’t top-over the hole...just heavy. More concerning in that case though would be the ankle break traps you’d be leaving in some dude’s field.

Mortars? Pshhh.... Who said anything about mortars? Those are not legal in my state of residence. I’d be silly to have a bag of 30 just laying around before celebrating my nation’s independence.

Sch40... Got it.

Tri is better becaue quad needs flat ground.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Its probably because my office is designing a beach house on piles and they have to ram the piles into the ground. Its something like $1000 each to get them in there and there are 52 of them. You kn\now what would be fun actually really dumb is if a couple fairly large bottle rockets got attached to something like a 2 liter coke bottle full of gasoline. something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

please note: it is a very dumb idea. I would love to see a video of it, but hopefully no one does this.

My brothers and I always just pounded ours into the ground. Beware, though, we once blew a really big hole in the parents lawn and my dad was pissed.

they are legal here but it’s so dry there is a county wide fireworks ban, they may even cancel the firework show the city puts on which would really stink. I was looking forward to watching the barge burn again.

That’s fantastic. I used to blow up pumpkins and other produce at my parents place years ago. The following season they had pumpkins growing everywhere

Knock the end into the ground a bit, enough that you can pull it out again with a bit of wiggling. (Tubing is really tough to pull out of the ground again if you stick it in deep). Put a tree stake in at a diagonal to the post, pointing in the direction of the blast. Use a tree tie to secure stake to post. Repeat if necessary. Total spend about $5.

For best results, take a circle cutter and make a cut in a block of wood, then use that between the hammer and the pipe, otherwise you’ll flare the ends.

I shouldn’t admit to some of the stuff we did, but one thing I’ll say is that a black powder charge will launch just about anything way into the air out of a pipe. Just stick with stuff that doesn’t hurt when it comes down.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

Don’t use steel, iron, etc. You don’t want anything that will become a pipe bomb if you have a shell detonate in the pipe.

Professional shows use pre-fab fiberglass mortars or HDPE pipe. The company I work for is going to fiberglass because we can get them pre-made and ready to use. In the old days we made our own from HDPE. The take home message is you want something that tears instead of something that shatters into shrapnel.
