I had a couple of bulbs out in the dash of my Scout, so I decided I’d replace them and maybe clean the gauge cluster up a little. Once I got it loose, I was greeted with THIS.

Kinja'd!!!

I guess International Harvester got a deal on some green wire??? It’s the original wiring. I had a lot of labling to do...

I’m very colourblind, welcome to my world. Get used to a sharpie and tape instead of simply sorting colours.

The builder thought he was using wires from both the green spool and the red spool. Turns out he’s colourblind.

My smart uses green and brown wires. On devices that require more than just power and ground? Basically every colour but red and black.

So...with a brain programmed to understand that red is hot and black is ground...Dafuq?

You clearly don’t know the illustrious history of IH and their Scout. These things are road-going tractors that they literally threw together as cars. There are so many variants of everything that you often have to remove the part and hunt (or replace it with something else entirely) to keep them going.

The good thing is that you can do it indefinitely because they weren’t designed nor built to high tolerances in any way.

I actually knew to expect all green, it’s just another thing entirely to see it. An E-Z wiring harness is somewhere in the future.

You are certainly appreciating the simplicity of the truck. I have one light out in the dash of my truck. I want to fix it but rough calculations tell me that it would require disassembly of most of the dash board to access it.

In some ways, yes. Removing the gauge cluster panel was a matter of removing 6 screws. Actually getting it free of the truck was another matter entirely.

It’s also worth metioning, the bulbs I thought were out were simply covered with dirt. You can see one in the picture.

In a w123 Mercedes the light knob pulls out and spins to go to all the settings etc. and I had to put in a new one, so I numbered them all and went in a circle. I hate electrical.

Even with everything the same color I find it relaxing and logical, but, I’m a freak.
