Kinja'd!!!

Can engine mounts break if the car is lifted in the wrong place?

My mom recently took her 2005 Acura RL (with 88k miles if this makes a difference) for a routine service at a local dealer. When they returned the car, the ride was extremely rough and it could not go over bumps without shaking. Turns out they lifted it in the wrong place when doing the oil change. We took the car back and they replaced the struts for free. However, the car still doesn’t go over bumps properly, so we took it back and now they say that the engine mounts are broken. The dealership also said that it will cost around $900 to fix it. Were the engine mounts damaged due to the car being lifted wrong?

Yes but they would have to be really stupid.

Which might be implied by either them screwing up the struts or replacing the struts without finding a real problem - whichever was the case here.

How the hell did they break the struts and motor mounts lifting a car.

You’d have to do something pretty strange for that to happen, like lifting the car by the engine... That doesn’t explain the struts though.

Furthering my last comment, maybe they lifted it somewhere stupid and bent a section of the car? That’d cause all kinds of problems. An alignment done after new struts might hide it a little but it’d never be the same again.

Still seems strange though.

Yes, but if that RL is a V6, that gives it a J series V6. J series V6s go through motor mounts like candy. Out odyssey has had 3 sets, but its only on its original transmission, which is weird

The RL does have a J series engine, but do you think that it could have been caused by the dealer? They are only diagnosing this now despite having tested the car just a few weeks ago when the struts were borked.

Possibly, even probably. But if its at 80sumthin thousand miles and has never had the motor mounts done, its probably due anyway

I don't know how they managed to do either. Anyway I hope it will drive well after this fix.
