I had this on my car(s) for years, but haven’t been using it... I finally put it back in the hopes that it will reduce highway noise of my roof rack. Of course, when the bikes are on it, it’s hopeless. But they’re not up there most of the time. What are the oppo-pinions on this?

Kinja'd!!!

Kind of a lot going on up on that roof there...

Roof racks and stickers are two things I hate.

At least you apparently use the roof rack for something. Roof racks just for the look make me want to slap the shit out of people.

I have the bars I got on craigslist just sitting in my garage, waiting for the feet to come in the mail as I didn’t realize the estimated delivery said July 13th rather than June 13th. I’m getting tired of having to take my mother’s car to go paddle boarding.

Those wind deflectors work pretty well. It’s probably those upright bike carrier trays you have that make all the noise. Fork mount trays are a bit more aero and they can all face forward. But then you have to remove the front wheel and if it’s a Lefty or trough axle fork you need an adapter and so on and so on.... So I now have a 2-bike hitch rack on the Outback with two trays on the roof.

Haha, yes I use it all the time. In the winter it’s got a box full of skis and shovels that I use probably 5 days a week.

What I can’t stand is crap like this:

Kinja'd!!!

I mean, really? You occasionally carry a kayak, so you’re going to bolt essentially a set of aluminum moose antlers to your roof ALL OF THE REST OF THE TIME?!! There’s a car I see all the time with TWO of these monstrosities on top. It’s a Rav4. It’s ridiculous. I’ve NEVER, I mean, ever, seen kayaks on it. The same people have a Taurus wagon that they have the kayaks stuffed into the back of, like, all the time as far as I can tell.

Wow, sorry [/end rant]

I stopped using the wind deflector because most of the time I used the rack in the winter with a roof box. So..... wind noise? Yeah. It’s the box.

Now that I’m biking again, and I can’t just use my truck all the time (kid seats) I have to use the car. I like that I can just toss the bikes up on the roof in about 15 seconds. But yeah, a little wind noise... and I can’t really use my sunroof over about 35mph.

Fav and replying because reply is perfect. Hate that roof racks are something of a trendy accessory currently.

Side note: if i switch from hitch to roof rack i might try to color match wind deflector.

I have a soft rack for my surfboard and paddleboard. I can’t figure out for the life of me to reduce the vibrating noise that starts at 30mph. I feel your pain.

I got aero bars so they can stay on the roof all the time without making any noise, but they are very easy to take off, so they only really go on when I am planning a trip. I don’t plan to carry bikes up there. I hope to avoid it by buying a hitch mounted rack. It’s amazing how little noise the box makes when it is mounted.

Kinja'd!!!

I agree with Highlander. It’s the trays and mounting gear that are making the noise. You might be better off with a bigger/better positioned wind screen.

The straps, they vibrate at speed. Unfortunately I can o ly identify the cause, not a solution.

I know that is where I’m at. I’ve tried tying them down in different methods. I have a new method that I’m going to try tomorrow morning.

The straps, yes. If you twist them they won’t vibrate like that. It doesn’t look as pretty but just a single twist over any area that’s vibrating will cure it.

Really? Damn, I’ll try this the next time I put the Kayak on my roof. I just picked up a roof rack I’ll see if I want a cradle or just strap it to the rack. Thanks for the tip.

Yep, the same is true on boats with bimini tops that use straps in the bow or stern. They buzz like crazy until you put a twist or two in them. It bugs the hell out of me because it looks like crap, but it stops the vibration.

Kinja'd!!!

Those straps look nice and straight... but wait till you get up to speed.

In case my reply to DasWauto didn’t come across your feed or whatever, I wanted to be sure you saw it: you can twist the straps and that fixes the vibration... not a lot of twists, but one or two should do it.

Haha. I should have thought back to the days of owning my 16’ Dauntless. I hated that stupid top.

Ha! That’s why mine’s hard-mounted to my tower:

16’ Dauntless, though, great boat!

Yea I miss it. Just didn’t have time for it. I’d love to get into a 24’ Contender and back into fishing, but not sure if the funds/wife will allow it ha.

I hear ya. I worked at a marina for a long time before changing jobs last year. So my boat was very inexpensive to make into what it is (not stock, as they say). I also met my wife on the lake, so she’s into the boat, and the kids are approaching a fun age for it.

I’m so with you on this that I removed the cross rails of the factory rack on my Outback. They’ll only go back on when I finally get a kayak, and even then only when said kayak is being transported.
