Upgrade to 32gb of ram (I’ll admit it’s overkill) and get one new 24 inch monitor or just get 2 new monitors and stick with 16gb for now?
I ordered a new laptop for college yesterday and have some of the money I would have spent on it leftover because I bought it refurbished. I could just save the money but I like multi tasking and my monitors right now are from 2003 and are square.

Dual monitors is always better IMHO. The 16gb of ram should be plenty for most anything you would do in a computer I would think.

Get the monitors. Upgrade ram when the time comes that 16 gb isn’t sufficient for you anymore.

Monitors. Unless you’re running into issues with not enough ram you’ll be wasting your money. You may not need dual monitors but you will benefit from them unlike ram which if you don’t need you get no benefit.

My university says minimum of 16 for my major and recommends 32. They also insist laptop over desktop. I’ll be using it for autoCAD, Adobe Suite, and I’ll be doing 3ds max things on my own time. 16 should get me along just fine for now but 32 will definitely get things done smoother.

I currently have 4gb in both my pc and mac and they choke. I guess I’m just going ram crazy. 16 should be just fine but I can always go to 32. And I love duel monitors. This laptop actually has a graphics card! No more Intel 4000 for this guy!

Hmmm, now that you mention CAD, that might make it a bit more difficult. Any chance you can get some cheap matched ram somewhere? If you went with the 24" monitor, would you still use one of your other monitors for a dual setup?

AutoCAD doesn’t need shit for RAM, but 3DS Max certainly will, so I’d stick with the 32GB.
I’m kind of surprised they have you using such a dumb (re: non-parametric 2D program) CAD program like AutoCAD, as opposed to Inventor or Solidworks. Especially since they have you using 3DS Max.

8gb crucial sticks are about $50 so it’d be $100 to upgrade (I ordered the computer with 8x2 and it has 4 ram slots and a max of 32).
These old monitors aren’t worth moving with. I could probably pull the duels and the Ram but I’d rather buy a parking spot. Might just buy one second semester.

My work-issued laptop runs 16GB ram. I often have AutoCAD or Microstation, ArcGIS, Outlook, MULTIPLE Chrome windows (memory hog), Word, Excel, a Python editor, and IDLE running at the same time. The only ones I don’t use daily are the CAD packages.
When at work, I run triple monitors - two 24” and the laptop screen. I am so spoiled by this that I don’t even like turning on my laptop at home. If I have to work from home for an extended period, I take one of the other monitors with me. It’s that important.

I’m bottlenecked by my integrated graphics (MB Air) but at 8 gb of ram it’s never slowed down. Reading your other comments I'd stick with 16 still and upgrade if/when needed. I don't know your budget but if you look online enough you may be able to find a couple cheap sticks of 16gb or since you have 4 slots, 4 8 gb sticks.

I use 3ds max for myself. I like making little models and animations. I have suffered for years using it with only 4gb. We use those programs eventually but 1st semester is auto cad. I’m thinking keep the 16 for now and upgrade when things start to bog.

16 is still 4x more than what I’m used to. And I have an ssd now! I can render without melting my keyboard!

Buy two new monitors. I run Pro/E all day everyday at work with some pretty complex models and I’m running on an 8GB system just fine. I only had one monitor for a while and it was a giant pain in the ass. Two nice monitors are much more valuable in my opinion.
