Is there anybody out there who plays FIFA 15 and can explain to this exasperated dad why his son keeps wanting to throw money at EA Sports for more players? It seems like every couple of weeks it’s another $10 (or more) because all of his players are injured. He’s looking at websites that seem to offer thousands and thousands of coins for minimal amounts of money, but I’m convinced there must be a catch. I just don’t understand how it all works.

Don’t give EA money. Mail them packages filled with feces instead.

It’s EA and they’ve found a microtransaction goldmine. As if yearly releases weren’t enough of a moneysink, now you can buy packs of virtual trading cards...

But wait, there’s more!

The cards don’t last forever... you need to recharge them If you want your virtual Lionel Messi to keep playing he’ll need to have his contract occasionally renewed. Oh yeah, you need to buy cards that let you re-sign top-tier players... and everyone else. I started to get into it and quit. I have friends that have full top-tier fantasy teams.

It’s addictive in the same way that grinding shooters and RPGs are addictive except it’s sports, so somewhat more socially acceptable, but far far more expensive.

I will download all sorts of fantasy baseball/football/soccer whatever apps for my kids, any sort of free (or even cheap paid) games that involve sports. But this kind of thing... nah. I like to pay $40-$60 once for a sports game and that’s that for a couple years. Even that is too much nowadays with so many games being affordable.

Though EA is no worse with this sort of thing than anyone else these days, this is one of the more egregious cash grabs ever. The kid with no sense of financial sense could buy an $80 Limited Edition, then drain $10-$20 into “micro” transactions every few weeks. It’s pretty f’ing criminal in my eyes.

they do in the main part of the game however in the trading card game you have to spend coins to get new packs of players and it’s very costly

Fifa has a game mode called ultimate team. In this mode you build a deck of cards which represent various aspects of your football club. The cards come in 3 tiers that being, bronze, silver and gold. You want gold cards since they have the best stuff obviously but they a lot of coins. You can get coins by buying them with real money from official or third party channels or you could just play the game and earn them properly. There are two reasons why your son wants to spend real money. Either he wants the absolute best of the best which is pointless since it barely makes a difference as the game is about skill or your son simply sucks at the gamegame and is too impatient. I’m gonna guess the first option. Either way DO NOT BUY him anymore packs. The catch is that you don’t have to but it is so cheap many people just say fuck it to save a bit of time and effort.

My son is a mixture of both. Question: how do you buy coins from third party channels? How can you buy them on the Internet and have them applied to your game? And what is the catch? How can 200k coins only cost $2US?

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been watching my boys play, and open these “packs” of players, and I’m reminded of all the allowance money he sunk into Pokemon cards that are now languishing in a shoebox somehwere. He’s got the money to blow on this stuff, but I’m trying to teach him that some money is poorly spent. And if there’s a way to earn the coins, then by God he’s going to earn them.

I play FIFA, but I just don’t go into that part of the game, since I just think it is a waste of money and there is enough fun in the rest of the game., like Carreer mode, Tournaments, etc. I would say don’t buy him any more cards.

Thanks. I keep telling him that there are problems that should be solved with work, and not money. We don’t have endless supplies of it in our house.

People buy them from cheaper markets in Eastern Europe and them sell at a tiny mark up to people in the west. The way it works in game is through essentially a gifting system. You give them the money and your GT and within minutes they will have gifted you the coins. It scary how reliable the service is and that EA haven’t shut it down.

The trouble is, he can’t ever win a career mode or tournament game, and he ends up screaming and yelling and sobbing about how he never wins and don’t I know how it feels to lose every time??!!!111! I encourage him to practice, to do tutorials, to learn different strategies, but I don’t think he has the patience for that.

Tell your son that you won’t subsidize his gaming, especially microtransaction bullshit. And tell him to grind to earn the coins, not with real money when said real money was already used for purchasing the damn game.

Also tell him EA sucks donkey balls and that never changes.

I could see that. It’s frustrating. Lower the skill level or find another game (I hear PES is a good alternative). Also, if my boy was this big into FIFA I’d probably gauge how much he might like being in real soccer, get him into reg season and indoor/off-season stuff if he’s into it. My dad was a coach and a ref because he saw it as his duty to encourage anything that wasn’t video gaming, haha. Are you in the Marylandish area? Montgomery County Soccer was the best soccer outlet I ever had—they knew what they were doing.

Gamertag or Username. Nope not a scam. People take this shit seriously to the point that if you type Fifa 15 into Google the first suggestion is coins and that some people are even buying ads on Google for their site.

He’s been playing soccer for a few years now, and is the team’s No. 1 goalie. I think that’s why he’s so into the game.

How do you lower the skill level?

Also, I saw them playing some PES in GameStop the other day. How does it differ from FIFA? Do you still get the famous players?

I’d like to know how many psychologists are employed at EAS. They have found a way to basically get my son hooked on crack. And now I’m stuck with getting him dried out. Thanks again for your time.

I’ve seen that. My son is showing me a site that is offering 60k coins for $1.50. But it’s just like finding a cheaper drug dealer. Is there any concern with giving away my Username? Do I have to make an account somehow that is outside of my normal PS account? Sorry to bug you; I just have no idea how it works.

Kinja'd!!! djmt1 > ttyymmnn

Kinja'd!!!1

The only concern is spam. You do it once and they will spam you and everyone on your friend’s list to buy more. All in all the system is legit, you can buy coins from third party source but your drug dealer comparison is a good one. The get you in and spam you with messages to buy more and before you know it, you could of bought a season ticket to the club you support with the amount of money you have spent.

I will never under stand why people keep buying the latest FIFA game, if we are going by real life accuracy as long as the game allows you to have Messi and you are half decent you should dominate.

I’m going to admit... I bought this year’s FIFA and haven’t cracked the seal on it. I am EA’s wet dream. But the difficulty has to be scale-able: set skill level to amateur or whatever.

Also, it’s seemed to me that FIFA has often been about everything being pretty and very simulation-like, but a bit short on intuitive control and precise handling etc. They have _often_ proven me wrong with some years being so spot-on control wise and fun-wise that I end up buying them again for a few years. And the glitziness of star players and all of the world’s pro teams plus all the national teams... it sells itself.

PES: no, no star licensing typically. Some people think it concentrates more on fluid gameplay. And in reality it’s no less expensive -but- it doesn’t try to sink the hooks into people for the microtransactions (AFAIK) and might, just might, be more about the experience and less about the looks and vibe and glamour.

Good luck anyway. My boy has a bank account built up and likes to entertain the idea of buying $45 baseball caps that he’ll outgrow within the year. Ah, kids. It’s rough being a kid and not having the income that keeps our economy going. After all, if you don’t buy all this garbage, the terrorists win.

FIFA certainly is, and you can bet that they’re getting a cut of the action on this game. It’s a licensing gold mine.
