I entered a national level arrive-and-drive kart race this weekend.

I got my ass handed to me. I was barely able to break the top 15 in 20-23 kart fields. And I’m supposed to be racing my Formula F at the semi-pro level later this year... :\

How was it, aside from, um, “being humbled”? Good experience, at least? Is it difficult to get into? I’ve been thinking about trying this, but I’m a bit scared to try it, to say the least. :S

Looks like fun, though!

It was this event: http://sportkartusa.calspeedkarting.com/

Anyone can sign up, the entry fee is around $450, excluding practice which goes for 3 days and is $100 for 4 sessions.

It’s kind of annoying not having control over your kart for set-up changes and such, but they were about as equal as you can reasonably expect. The event itself was very well run, and all the staff and competitors were super friendly. If you’re interested I’d totally recommend it, but get as much practice locally as you can.

Wow, not a bad price, considering what you’re getting yourself into. Glad to hear it was a friendly environment, that certainly helps! “Locally” either means a trip to Adams Motorsports Park or CalSpeed. Both equally distant from my house, haha.

Thanks for the insight, man! Good luck in your endeavors!

I did indoor karting recently and also go smoked. The problem is being a full sized adult, and going up against scrawny kids that have a 100 lb weight advantage, in addition to whatever aero advantage they have from being shorter.

There needs to be ballasts in them so everybody is equal weight!

This is typically my excuse... except I’m about 20-40 lbs heavier than my friends despite being shorter. Muscle being heavier than fat of course.

When someone who is bigger than me whips my ass on a kart is when I get annoyed.

I tried one of their series last year after a few years of no motor sports practice at all. Met some cool people, got a sun burn and snagged second to last place in a 50 person ranking. The amount of people with race suits and custom airbrushed helmets out there was staggering.

They did, everyone was ballast-ed to 200lbs. With my gear on I was 208 so I can’t really claim that was a disadvantage.

Yea, it’s like that one guy at the indoor place who takes it super seriously, except here that’s everyone.
