K-Roll totally got me on this one. Based on my vague clues alone of the car being German and having a change holder built into the door....... So what might I be getting myself into?
I’m potentially purchasing an ‘86 Porsche 928. My reasoning? Let me elaborate.
The 928 was something special. Ahead of it’s time, dangerously quick and a general risk for Porsche and their deep enough pockets. A car that was meant to take the place of the 911, but ended up....... not taking the place of the 911.
Even though the key is where the key should be and the engine where the engine should be, if I end up with this said 928, the licence plate will not be H982 FKL and it won’t be clad with crappy new aftermarket wheels. Most likely, it will be clad with crappy aftermarket 80’s BBS wheels. Feel free to judge me, I just judged you solely based on what you were thinking about me.
Yeah, it’ll probably be expensive to maintain and yeah it’ll probably make everybody question my sanity and put me in a psych ward after spending $1,000 on a muffler, but fuck it. Perfectly reliable cars are boring as hell since you’ll never have to get your hands dirty and your wallet drained. Scratch the last part. The 928 was an expensive car when it came out, (100k-ish with inflation) and many call it a supercar, so I’ll shut up about that now.
Wish me luck with this Oppo. I’ve had a hell of a year trying to track down a cheap classic.

Old expensive cars are like girl friends if they start causing to much problems, and start to cost too much money, you kick them to the curb, some one else will love them and make it work, you’ll be wiser and have a few great stories. But if you find one that you love and it works, stick with it, and maybe just maybe you’ll spend the rest of you’re lives together.
Ps. She’s German so I’m sure she’ll be in to weird stuff so watch out!

How would it not be a cheap classic? Under $5,000, rapidly appreciating?

“I’m potentially purchasing an ‘86 Porsche 928.”
I stopped reading right there.
DO IT! Doooo Eeeeeeet!
The 928 is a car I’ve lusted after since I was a kid. When I saw Tom Cruise and Rebecca DeMornay (she’s still a full on hottie!) Submarine one in Risky Business I was hooked!
Oddly, over the years and many, many cars I’ve never pulled the trigger on a 928.

From all I’ve heard, you are almost always better off spending more upfront for a newer 90s model than getting a late 70s or early 80s one. They’ll probably cost you $1000-$2000 a year minimum to keep running, too.

Covered. Not maintainance, but it's a fairly well documented and maintained car. Shouldn't have any real issues, said nobody ever. It's all part of the expirience.

Mid 80’s I'd say, but still. I'm ready for anything. Under $1,000.

The 928 is not “sweaty hours in your back yard fixing a carburetor” unreliable.
The 928 is “Pay tons for specialized tools, nonexistent parts, and labor that the average mechanic can’t do from a specialist.” unreliable.
When your water pump fails, and all the steam from under you hood billows up around you, you will look up to oppo and shout “save me!”
And I’ll whisper
“no”

Oh my god a 928! I dream of owning one of those. They’re like early German muscle cars. FUCKING BUY IT. But beware of the electronics in it. That’s that only thing that would scare me away from one.

Get off oppo before someone tries to talk you out of it. Do it!! I have no experience working on old Porsches but know I’ll always be willing to lend a hand because 928’s are cool.

Good for you! I’ve always wanted one but never had the guts to do it. There is no substitute. But phone dials are the only wheel for 928s.

As long as you have all the cash to burn and no problems with burning it, then by all means, have fun! But if you expect this to be your daily driver / only car or are really tight on your budget without lots of savings you’re okay using, then I would be hesitant. There’s not much on those cars you can do on your own, too.

There’s plenty of resources on Rennlist and other places, I’m keeping my A4 also.
It’s considered a supercar of the time, with supercar maintenance.

Okay. I wasn’t sure what was going on there. PHEW. You scared me. But OMG, They have one at a dealer near me! My friend texted me over the weekend about it. So tempted to go TD it. They also have it in white with the “orange” interior (which I prefer to black cuz Cali), but I don’t prefer white to dat blue so.

Lies. Pure unadulterated lies.
The plate will of course be H982 FKL.
